Late Church

Based on a sermon by Rev. Terry Goodman, July 2013

Unlike the Book of Acts

We lack the love

We lack the power

of the Holy Spirit

Spent of our limited efforts

Wielding the world when -

we ought to be weighed down by our grief

over our utter lack of prayer

We ought to emulate the Master

His constant connection to the Father

The domination of Love

If only we gave as much of our time

to the cause of Christ as to this shallow life

We are late to love

Late to live for Him

Late to bend our knees

Late to bend our will

Late - when He comes again

A/N: We often hail the miraculous evangelistic efforts of the early church and with good reason. Just read the Book of Acts. Or read the works of the Early Church Fathers. Or even much later, the journals of John Wesley, founder of Methodism. It is as if these Christians believed with every fiber of their being in the power of the Holy Spirit to heal, to save, to penetrate the most stubborn hearts. I think we are missing that today; the awe, reverence and expectation of Divine power and intervention. At least in the "civilized" world, it seems we are more awed by the gadgetry in the latest smartphone than we are of the incredible, inexhaustible power of Almighty God. Thus, as the opposite of the early church - we are the "late church" -- and you can find the rest in the body of the poem. My prayer - that we would catch some of the early church's fervor and power. In the name above all names, Jesus Christ, Amen.
