Darcy's Ball Gown

I had been holed up in my brothers room for a few hours and I needed to get out of my wretched state. Slipping my phone out of my pocket I checked my makeup in the selfie camera. My mascara had run causing large black streaks trailing down my cheeks my other most noticeable flaw were my bloodshot eyes apart from this I looked tolerable. Olivier had gone to lacrosse practise but left me with the promise he'd be straight back. While we argue he's the one solid person that always there for me, that I willingly help me and see my breakdowns and for that I'll be forever grateful and supportive of him.
Leaving his room I headed to my own to freshen up when I literally collided with my mother. She was dressed in a chic all black outfit from her own label Espéré which is a French translation of her maiden name hope. While my mother doesn't always see eye-eye with me, we are quite alike; similar tall slender build, long golden blonde hair and a dazzling smile our only difference is our eyes. My mother was probably the woman that I aspire to be business-wise. She had connections and influence in all major fashion houses and magazines and her designs have featured on vogue covers for the last 6 years. Before that she was a high demand supermodel and 'it girl' of the US but she changed the catwalk for the boardroom and is now on the Forbes top America's 100 female rich list from her own wealth alone not combined with my fathers.

She looked up to me with an expression of annoyance and then guilt. "Darcy, Olivier said you weren't, how do I put it, but pleased with your fathers choice of words but please remember he gets easily frustrated don't take it too personally sweetie. Also I have some exciting news as you know there is the Beverly Hill Philanthropist Gala coming up and I have a surprise in store for you, follow me!" She exclaimed whilst hurrying down the hall.

I was certain she was feigning excitement my mother only gets this excited about a few things; modelling, shopping and fashion; these also happen to be the things that she is best at too, no coincidence, obviously. Her heels were clicking quickly against the marble flooring towards her fashion studio and she was muttering to herself about various measurements and colours repeatedly saying gold. As we reached her studio two large black glass doors towered over us without hesitation she pushed them open.

The studio was packed with mannequins of various colours and shapes wearing full outfits  in preparation for New York fashion week. Different fabrics of every colour lined the walls, however, what stood out the most was a beautiful gown in the centre of the room. The gown was floor length, it pooled around the base of the mannequin and was a mix of metallic gold and risqué sheer cut-outs. My mother grabbed my hand and rushed up to it.

"Now this was meant to be somewhat of a surprise." She paused clearly not trying to talk about my father. "But after this mornings event you already know the theme and I thought you could use a pick-me-up. I've been working on this for about 5 months all fit to your measurements. And is gold, real gold, not the definition of Hollywood Glamour?" She was grinning at me clearly proud of all of this.

I was speechless. It may just seem like a dress to some but my mother is an incredibly busy woman who has to deal with the scandals of her marital life, her fashion empire and any family matters relating to the media yet she had worked on this all for me, does she not see me as worthless too?

"You haven't said anything sweetie, do you not like it? I guess I could see what else I've got but-"

"Mom it's perfect thank you for working on it for so long for me. I really love it mom." I spoke whilst engulfing her in a hug.

"Ok, what have you done to my little girl? Where's this affection and contact coming from." She laughed while squeezing me back. "Oh also things just get better, as this is the first gala you're attending you know that you must be accompanied by someone suitable, someone who will cause you to make some headlines and your father and I have the perfect candidate." She smiled while mischief twinkled in her eyes.

"Who is it mom? Is it a celebrity? Are they hot?" The media coverage if I went with someone famous would be endless.

"No sweetie, but the family is just as, if not more influential than ours and many say the boy is attractive although I am a married woman. Now go get some rest tomorrow shall be a busy day and today hasn't exactly been the most erm pleasant of experiences so I'll see you down here for 9am sharp no makeup and hair loosely brushed." With that she gave me a kiss on each cheek before shooing me out of the studio.

I hurried back to my room to avoid my father when I realised I hadn't eaten yet today. Not that it mattered, I was hardly hungry and I had to fit into that dress perfectly - if I didn't have my looks what else did I have and we all know the saying skip dinner wake up thinner.

After getting ready for bed I Sunk into my Egyptian cotton sheets and reached for my phone. Scrolling though the notifications from various group chats and social medias checking my follower and like count on each just as a message from Penelope popped up.

P-  Guess who's going to the Philanthropist Gala tomorrow ... moi! I'm so excited x

Once I shut my phone I closed my eyes relaxing, drifting off into a deep sleep. Drifting off to my calm before the storm.
