Miri is a broke, low-level hedge witch who has no real access to the kinds of magical resources and education Kate does. She has lived a hard life, having been an orphan who aged out of the foster system without being adopted (though had been through a series of abusive foster homes).
She came to hedge witchery when she was kicked out of her new-age Wicca group (Wiccans are not magical, just earth-worshippers) for her catty back-stabbing and gossiping. Through an online magical user group, she stumbled upon an actual witch, albeit a very young one, who gave her some tips on how to brew some revenge potions that seemed to have some kind of mild magical effect on their intended victims. She used the potions to get even with the wiccans who kicked her out of their group, and it gave them all diarrhea. Miri was thrilled to finally have some agency and was hooked on magic after that.
