Chapter 1 - Just Ready

So, we’re finally alone” she smiled, her hair is down, she keeps brushing brown ringlets out of her eyes. She worries her bottom lip “look at us…all alone up here…alone…no one else in the house because we’re alone”

I grinned at her “they’ll be back with the pizza in like ten minutes…”

She blushed “a lot can happen in ten minutes Kennett”

  “Are you suggesting we-…”

“-make out?” she smiled “I’m definitely suggesting that”

I took a few brisk steps toward her “what’s got you so eager all of a sudden”

Elodine pressed her hands flat against my chest, they curled, her fingers holding onto the fabric of my shirt “not eager…just ready”

I stopped her hands in their quest to unbutton my shirt “calm down you young’n”

  “I’m not a young’n Kennett, yesterday I was a girl but now I’m a woman. I’m fifteen years old! I’m a mature adult!”

I held onto her hands “you’re still a young’n compared to me”

She let go off my shirt “okay Kennett, fine, I’ll stop”

I followed her into the kitchen where Elodine gingerly poured herself a glass of orange juice, her eyes focused on the square cake on the counter next to her

I leaned against the refrigerator “it’s your birthday Elli, try to have a little fun instead of jumping head first into something you’re not ready for”

She rolled her eyes, her fingers holding onto the glass so tight I thought it might crack in her hand. I pried the glass from Elodine’s fingers and set it down on the counter. “Birthday girl, look at me”

She did so grudgingly “what is it Kennett?”

“You’re saying you want me to kiss you, right here in your kitchen, on your little fifteenth birthday”

She did that thing where she overdramatically rolls her eyes “no, it was what I hoped you would do without me having to pounce all over you like a whore”

I walked over to her “you’re not a whore, you’re just...eager. I think it’s cute” I wrapped an arm around her “I think you’re adorable Elli. I’m here to celebrate with you, not make everything complicated and cheat on my girlfriend”

Elodine squirmed out of my grasp and threw her arms up “it’s just that! You’re not romantic, like, at all. You’re supposed to break the rules and kiss me because you’re feelings for me are strong!” she pouts “but they’re not strong, and they never will be” her hands drop to her sides “not even when I wear this incredibly revealing cocktail dress.” She shakes her head “I’ve wanted you to like me since...forever, but you always blow me off. I’m just done trying, if you like Sarah so much then fine, be with her. I’m glad you’re happy” she yells, her chest rising and falling

“No you’re not” I refuted “you’re selfish Elli, all you care about is yourself. You never thought about her or whether she really cared about me. You didn’t think about me, or how much I like her. You didn’t think about any of that!” I yelled

She shakes her head “you’re right, I didn’t. I thought about my childhood with you. How you’re so close to my brother and I thought about you always showing me how to play video games, and how you would let me sit on your lap and cry if I fell playing in the backyard. You used to make fun of my pony tails and whenever my mom made me lunch you would steal half of my PBJ. I thought about all the times I would sneak out the house and ride my bike to your school to watch you play baseball. I thought about all the countless diaries I went through writing about you” her voice raises “so no Kennett! I didn’t think about you and your girlfriend, because you’ve only known her for a month!” she yells

I stand there feeling like Elodine just kicked me in the stomach

It all comes back to me in a flash, letting her sit between my legs on the floor while I played Mortal Combat. Those adorable little pony tails she wore every day in the fifth grade. Her obsession with PBJ sandwiches, my obsession with stealing half her sandwiches. The odd giggling my team always heard while we practiced...

It all came back in an annoyingly realistic rippling wave. I open my mouth to say something but she just storms out of the house leaving me standing in the kitchen feeling like an idiot

So what do you think so far?

Is Kennett or jerk or what?

Do you think Elodine is too desperate?"

  Do you ship it?
