RYDER

After making sure Aelius would get me Jex, I head back into Forks where I can keep a close eye on the family my sister has decided to call her own.

I want to find out more about this boy who thought he was in love with her. I would not have another Jex come into her life. I get out my laptop that I carry with me when I travel and go to a nearby café that has free Internet. I connect and then do some research to find out everything about this boy. His name is Seth Clearwater and he lives at the local Native American Reservation. He was eighteen years old, and had lost his father a couple years ago.

That’s all I need to know.

I decide the first thing I need to do is confront my sister about her boyfriend choices.

It’s time this stopped. I speed off toward the house where I know she stays, where I can feel her. I fight the urge to bust the door off its hinges, but then decide better of it, because I want her to listen to me. However much I wanted to break down the door, or even this whole house, I needed to at least act civil.

I walk up to the door and am about to knock, when the full-blood vampire who had stopped Seth from attacking me, and me from attacking him, opens the door.

“If you don’t mean anyone harm, Ryder, you may come on in. I know you wish to see your sister,” he says.

I give him a look. How does he know that? I think.

“I can read minds,” he answers. My eyes widen for just a split second, before I compose my face.

“Well I don’t mean anyone harm. I simply want to talk with my sister. In private,” I add.

“I’m here, Ryder,” Avalon replies, standing in the doorway, just slightly behind the full-blood.

“I don’t know if it’s a good idea for you to be alone with him, Avalon,” the mind-reader murmurs.

“It’s okay Edward. His intentions are good. You want to warn me about something?” she asks.

I nod. “Again, in private. I don’t trust anyone else,” I tell her.

“I trust them.”

You do. I don’t Avalon.”

She nods and looks in the mind-readers direction for a second, telling him that we won’t go far, only ear-shot away. She takes my hand and we run in the woods, stopping once we’re far enough so the others can’t hear us.

“What is it, Ryder?” she asks. She feels weary.

“Your boyfriend, that Seth guy—“ I start, but she interrupts me.

“How do you know about him?” she asks, snapping at me.

“I told you Avalon, I watch over you,” I told her.

Spy on me is more like it!” she shouts.

“He’s no good for you, Avalon. I want you to stay away from him,” I tell her, keeping my voice low.

“You can’t tell me what I can and can’t do! You don’t control my life! I only just found out you were my brother at all! What makes you think you have a right to be in my life, after all these years?!” she screams.

I swallow. “You may not have known I was there, but I was. I’ve always kept an eye on you. I’ve stayed in the shadows, for your well-being,” I tell her. I can’t help my voice as it rises too.

“That’s on you; not me. I love Seth with all my heart and he would do anything to protect me, just like you. You should be thankful for him, not trying to get me to stay away from him,” she says, getting tears in her eyes.
