A boy of about 16 years old stood guard on the rooftop of the Hospital. He faced the cliff. He was tall and burly for his age, although his head was disproportionally small compared to the rest of him. He impatiently brushed his hazel hair out of his equally hazel eyes and adjusted his binoculars. Below him, he could see the glow of the City of Lights at the bottom of the cliff, but that wasn't his main concern. Today, his best friend Dan was going to be taken away and with his sharp eyesight, he wanted a last glimpse of him before he disappears forever. The boy shuffled his large feet anxiously. Dan was like a brother to him. When people talked about them it was always "Dan and Jake did this... Jake and Dan did that." He would miss Dan so much. Suddenly, Jake gasped. There it was! The smooth gray helicopter looked like it rose out of the ground, blowing leaves away. The sound of the motor grumbling shook the ground as it landed. He started to frown as he saw the cardboard box full of supplies being dropped on the ground and Dan being dragged inside the helicopter by a blonde woman. A middle-aged man with a worried, panicked look on his face ran out and gave a bundle of blankets to the nearest child, that girl Jenny. He whispered something in her ear and then ran back to the machine as it flew back down the cliff again. Jake hesitated for a second. This was the daily procedure; take an 18-year-old, drop the supplies and hand over a new-born baby. Yet something was different this time, he could feel it. Je ran down the stairs to go see what was going on.
