Tom held tight to the tiny palm of the baby girl laying on her back in a black cot. He wasn't exactly supposed to be there, he wasn't supposed to see her but, the tiny part of him that felt human had some form of feelings for the creature. He wasn't sure what the feeling was, he had never had it before but, he felt it nonetheless. He placed the tip of his finger onto the baby's nose and smiled for the first genuine time ever when she giggled, reaching up for his hand.

He stared intently at the way she wiggled happily and attempted to roll herself over onto her stomach, grunting a little under her breathe as she wobbled back to the same position and frowned deeply at the failure. The tall male groaned and chuckled as he thought of how his little girl had gotten the determination and frustration from both him and her mother.

Creakily, he heard a door open in the background and a female voice coo to the small child, "Rainy, I'll be there in a second. My shower's all done." He breathed a heavy sigh as he listened to the voice. The woman he used. The woman he threw away for power. Who he never really loved, because he couldn't. And he leaned down slowly to the small girl, rubbing his scratchy lips over her forehead in some form of a kiss before he stepped away. "Good night my raindrop." He could have taken her. He would have and honestly he wanted to. But, that tiny nagging feeling that she would be safer with her mother would not shake, and so he disappeared in a flow of magic.

Almost immediately after he had left the young mother came crashing into the nursery, covered with a small snowy towel and some slippers she tripped on the baby mat and grabbed for the young girl. She kissed her repeatedly and wiped the tears violently from her eyes. Cradling her tightly she breathed a sigh of relief, maybe she had not heard somebody apparate at all. Maybe her mind was playing tricks on her. It had done that before.

She had always been terrified that he would come for her. But, not the Tom she knew. The snake-like monster he had become. He would come and take away the child of his making. She had dreamt of it, fearing it.

She knew eventually he would come. That he would take her baby. She knew how selfish he was, that he wouldn't care for Rainy the way she would. She knew she had to escape from it.

She ran from it. From him.

I'm rewriting this because I liked the concept but, hated the writing so here's the updated version of a prologue.
