A Shooters Love

Chapter 6

We were currently in Springfield, Illinois fighting for our lives, 10k stood on top of a car killing z's with his slingshot. Vazquez and Warren were back to back fighting, Addy and Doc were swinging around baseball bats while Cassandra and Murphy tried to keep the z's away from little Lucy. I was a few feet away from 10k using my handguns against the z's as my rifle was against my back. You may be asking why we're not using our rifles it's simple, it's the damn apocalypse and were low on ammo.

I watched as Murphy carefully tossed Lucy to Doc as he caught her and fled into a bus. I pointed my left gun before it ran out of bullets. "Damn it," I said as I pocketed it and kicked away one before firing my right one. The z kept coming at me as all I heard from the gun was clicks as it was jammed up. "Aly," 10k screamed as I knew it to hit the ground while he covered me, I pocketed my other gun and stood up as we all made our way to help Doc out off the bus.

Warren and Addy released Doc and Lucy as a bunch of z's dressed as Lincoln spilled from the bus. Doc passed Lucy to Addy who then passed it to Warren, "Aly," Warren said as she finally passed her to me. I cradled her to my chest as I ran to avoid the z's, "Over here," 10k yelled as I ran behind him and crouched on the ground shielding Lucy as 10k protected her and I.

After all the z's were dead Murphy and Cassandra came running up to us, I stood up and looked at Lucy as she giggle and tried to pull at my hair. I handed Lucy back to Murphy as he hugged her gently, "Thank you," he said to me as I smiled and 10k took my hand. "Ok now that were done with the z's let's continue on," Warren said as we all nodded and headed towards the forest.

As we walked into the wooded area I pulled out my gun to unjam it. I pulled back as the bullet unlodged itself and dropped to the ground as I counted the remaining bullets and placed it back in my holster. 10k took my hand as we readjusted our rifles on our backs, "This is the second time that gun has jammed, maybe it's time to start looking for another melee weapon," he said as I nodded. "I miss my bat but I get what you're saying," I said as he noted the sad look on my face.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a hunting knife and held it out to me. "How about you use this till you find a new bat," he said as I took it from him and put it in my shorts pocket. I reached up and kissed his cheek as we stopped to rest, "thank you." I looked around as everyone was looking tired and ready to rest.

"Maybe we should find a place to rest, it'll be dark soon," I said as Warren nodded as I volunteered to scout up ahead. Doc stood up and stretched, "I'll go with her," he said as Vazquez volunteered also and the three of us walked further up ahead. "That baby is gonna get us killed with all the z's it attracts," Vazquez said as we agreed with him, "She's either gonna be the savior of mankind or the queen of destruction," I told them as the trees thinned out into a small clearing next to a clear river.

Our eyes widened as we saw the three tents, "Think there abandoned," Doc asked as that was answered by the five z's running towards us. Two went after Doc as Vazquez took care of the closet one leaving me with the last two, I pulled my gun up and shot one as I dodged the second and stuck out my foot tripping it in the process. It fell to the ground as I took out my knife and drove it into the skull, "Are you guys okay," I called out as  Doc and Vazquez walked up to me as Doc was caring a bloody shovel. I began to rummage through some off the cans while Vazquez and Doc checked over the tents and river.

"Well two of the tents are good, the other one has seen better days but it's still good," he told me as I stood up, "The river is clean there is even some fish swimming around we can use for food," Vazquez said as we heard rustling from the trees. We drew our weapons as the others busted through and we sighed with relief while putting our weapons away. "You all okay we heard gun shots," Addy said as she noticed the dead z's around. I rubbed the back of my head as I gave a short laugh, "We had a little trouble but look what we found," I said as they noticed the tents, river and canned food.
