I make it through the day without talking to Joe. Whenever I saw him at our lockers he tried to start conversation, but I just made a snarky comment and walked off, him laughing behind me.
I honestly don't think I'm the problem, it's him. He's too nice. I'm so horrible to him and yet he's still like the nicest person on the planet. I don't understand. It turns out that not only is he my locker neighbor, he's also in all of my classes which should be fun. Lunch was the only time I got a break from his obnoxious smiles and laugh.
As I make my way to my bus through the crowds of taller, older kids, I hear someone call my name. I spin around and realize that it's Maddie, running at me at full speed.
"MINAAAAAAA," she screams, still barreling towards me. She body slams me and we both go flying into a group of seniors.
"Sorry," I apologize, blushing from embarrassment. They look at us with disgust and the two of us shuffle away awkwardly.
"Jesus Maddie, what was that for?!" I ask, throwing my hands up. She laughs suspiciously. "Maddie..." I warn, "what did you do?" She laughs again and starts to skip away. I grab the back of her shirt and pull her back.
"You totally like him."
"Excuse me?" A grin spreads across her face.
"Joe. I see the way you look at him," she says slyly, batting her eyelashes. I roll my eyes.
"You mean with disgust and disappointment?"
"I know you," she replies, "I know you'll never admit it. But you have to face the reality that you like him Mina." I start to say something back, but stop when I see a familiar pair of eyes looking straight at me from across the sidewalk. He smiles and a lump grows in my throat.
"I gotta go Maddie. Uh, nice chatting," I tell her, not making eye contact. "I gotta go."
