chapter 8: Seeing Dan

I didn't know what to say to him, somehow I was already standing in my feet, I don't remember getting there but my legs felt useless and as if they were jelly. I could still feel his lips on mine and I the butterflies were still there, they were settling slowly but not going away.
"Zach I'm not every other girl-" I started.
"Is that what you think I think of you?" He asked taking a step back as if I had hit him.
"I...you..." I said not finding the right words to say.
"You are not the other girls, you are so different. I don't want you for sex or for the reasons I wanted the other girls. I want you for you." He said cupping my cheeks in his rough hands.
I didn't see any signs of lies in his eyes but I couldn't get into this now I have my brother in the hospital, the one person who loves me no matter what, hes in the hospital now, hurt because of some maniac on the road.
"I have to go, I'm sorry but Dan he's..." I said when I finally realised that Dan is in the hospital he is hurt and it could be really bad. The look on his face was hurt, but understanding as he put on a sympathetic smile and nodded.
"I'm sorry." I said sincerely as I looked at him he smiled and cupped my cheeks.
"I want to talk to you, but your brother is much more important right now, I understand, go, but please come back." He said and my heart skipped a beat. Keep it together Ria. I told myself but I couldn't it was so hard looking at him and seeing that he cared. Before I could stop myself I did something that I did not expect from me.
"Come with me?" I asked sounding as helpless as I felt, which is not something I ever did, ever. He looked shocked and happy, I was still in shock about my question.
"Yes I will." He said and I felt relaxed and relieved as he said that.

When we arrived at the hospital we were greeted by a grumpy old lady at the front desk.
"Hi, my names Leoni, how can I help you?" She asked in a monotone voice, her eyes never leaving her computer as she typed away.
"Hi, my brother is checked in here-" I started but she cut me off.
"It's not a hotels can't check in." She said and I was beginning to lose it.
"Alright listen here, Leoni, my brother has been emitted into the hospital because he was in a fucking car accident so call thefucking doctor who is taking care of him and I'll be out of your grey hairs." I said in a fake sweet voice through gritted teeth.
"What's his name?" She asked a little bit more sweetly.
"Daniel Evans." I said a little more calmly when Zach took my hand and gave it a squeeze.
"Ok then he is in room 209." She said and I smiled sarcastically.
"Thanks very much I'll be sure to let the head of this hospital about your hospitality and great attitude." I said with a wink as I walked down the halls to find his room.
"I swear it's because I'm Irish that she doesn't like me." I said looking at a smiling Zach. He was still holding my hand, keeping me relaxed as I looked for Dan's room.
"I don't think she didn't like you." He said smiling down at me.
"Ok, why are you smiling so much?" I asked with a laugh that I couldn't hold back.
"I just am. Is it a bad thing?" He asked, his smile widening.
"No its a good thing, but you haven't stopped since I asked you to come with me." I said.
"Do you really want to know why I am smiling so much?" He asked a little smirk playing at his lips.
"Yes." I said with a chuckle at his childish behaviour. He stopped abruptly and turned me around so my back was touching the wall. His proximity was making it difficult to concentrate, let alone breathe, then he put his lips to my ear and whispered in a husky voice.
"You." He whispered.
"What?" I asked taking in a deep breath as he looked at me. His eyes kept on looking down to my lips then back to my eyes.
"You make me smile." He said swollowing as if he was afraid of what I would say.
I looked up into his nervous blue eyes and smiled, wrapping my arms around his neck, my fingers tangling themselves into his dark hair.
"I'm not a sentimental person, ya know that." I said and he smiled as he rested his forehead on mine.
"I know." He said.
"I cant believe I'm going to say this, now, possibly the worst time to say it but..." I said as I looked up at him. It was clear that he was confused and anticipating the worst.
"But?" He asked.
"I like you, Zach. Quite a lot as well." I said looking down at the floor to avoid his gaze, but he lifted my chins I can look at a smiling Zach.
"Well, my little Leprechaun, the way I feel about you grows everyday." He said.
"What feelings?" I asked, making sure that those feelings weren't hatred or dislike.
"I'm falling for you." He said and that took my breath right out of my body.
"Zach." I managed to whisper and he smiled a small smile at me.
"Please be mine?" He said his forehead back on mine.
"Yes." I said a as I kissed him lightly. Hearing him growl, knowing he wanted more.
"Your brother." He said pulling away.
"Right, sorry about that." I said looking back down as I blushed.
"Don't be sorry, as long as you promise we can pick up where we left off when the visit is over." He said, his voice was husky again and left shivers running down my spine.
"I promise." I whispered in his ear. "Now let's go see my brother."
We walked into room 209. Dan was sitting on his bed reading a magazine when I knocked on his door. He looked up and smiled widely at me, opening his arms wide for me.
"Ri." He said as I came into his arms and for the first time in a year I cried.
"I thought it was really bad. I thought you were going to die. I was so worried." I said as i let out a sob into his chest. He stroked my hair and kissed my head.
"I'm OK, I'm going to be out next week." He said and I nodded, sniffling.
"I love you Dan." I said and he nodded and hugged me tighter.
"I love you too, Ri." He said. After a few seconds I felt him look up at Zach.
"Who's this?" He asked and I smiled up at Zach after wiping my eyes.
"Dan, this is Zach." I said doing the introductions.
"Aren't you the guy who she saw at the airport?" Dan asked with a knowing smile.
"I am." Zach said looking at me with a smirk.
"She has said so much about you." Dan said and I smirked at Zach when he smiled at me.
"Like what?" He asked.
"No good things I can assure you." Dan said with a chuckle and Zachs smile dropped. "But even then my sister has never spoken about a guy as much as she has about you. I thought she liked you then, now I know for sure that she must really like you." He said and my smirk dropped as Zachs grew. I cast Dan an accusing look and he smiled a cheesy smile at me.
"Oh is it?" Zach asked giving me a knowing look.
"Yes. But don't feel so smug I see the way you look at her too, it's like you see her as your world, you might of told her that you are falling, but you've fallen." Dan said and I looked at Zach. "And she loves you too." He said and the intensity in Zachs eyes multiplied by a thousand and I'm sure mine did as well.
"Sorry ma'am visiting hours are over, the patient needs to rest." A nice, young, nurse with blonde hair and kind green eyes said. I looked back at Dan and he was smirking at both of us.
Time to leave.
