Chapter 22 - The Aftermath

Three hours, two doctor consultations, and one surgery later, we began to drive back home. Turns out, Leo had a minor case of appendicitis that was luckily found early into the rupture. Unlucky for Leo, he had to go through the fear of surgery, which made him a total wreck. He was so afraid of the idea of surgery that Daman and I had to spend over an hour reassuring him before he was taken into the operating room.

Lucky for me, Dr. Barron was the doctor on call that night so he was scheduled to lead Leo's surgery; this allowed me to work as his assistant. Unlucky for Daman, Dr. Barron and I were spending time together while he sat in the waiting room; alone.

After the surgery, Leo was still partially sedated so he continued to snap in and out of sleep, making the remainder of the day went by fairly easy. Once Leo was tucked into bed, Daman and I retreated into the bedroom where I proceeded to do my homework and Daman did his office work. Neither of us wanted to stray too far from Leo.

"Are you going to pick that up?" I pointed to Daman's ringing phone. He was so focused on his work that he didn't even notice the shrill noise.

"Shit," He reached over for his phone and answered it without checking the caller ID. "Hello?"

"What could you possibly want Silas? Trust me when I say I don't have time for this," Daman huffed and brought the phone down to hang up, but was stopped by a loud yelling on the other end.

"What? What are you talking about? No, I haven't heard from him...okay, I'll let her know."

Daman slowly set the phone down on the nightstand and looked up at me wearily.

"What? What is it?"

"It's Lucas. Apparently, he came to Silas's house earlier today and stole $600 in cash from him," Daman spoke slowly as if he was afraid this would set me off like a bomb.

"You're joking." The words felt dry and nearly scratched my throat as I spoke them.

"I wish."

"How does he know it was Lucas?"

"Silas has security cameras in every corner of his house, he probably watched it happen."

"Oh my god," I groaned and placed my head in my hands. "I don't have time to worry about this right now. I have a test this Thursday!"

Tears began to well my eyes. Just thinking about everything that I had to do for school and all my worries at home with Leo were almost enough to make me want to cry.

"Hey, hey, it's okay," Daman moved over to my spot on the ground and wrapped his arms around me.

"Why does everyone in my family have to be crazy? I don't understand."

"Every family is problematic in its own way," he placed a soft kiss on my head.

"Well, not every family has long lost siblings that steal and are actually your boyfriend's brother's ex-boyfriend. God, that's weird." I cringed.

"You have to admit, this whole thing is kind of funny. In a morbid kind of way," Daman stifled a laugh.

"Remind me that next year," I rolled my eyes.

"Trust me, I will. You know what? I think we can agree that we both could use a vacation. Thanksgiving is coming up and Leo will have the week off from school."

"I still have class. I don't get much time off for Thanksgiving," I pouted. Having such a heavy workload only made it harder to enjoy my classes. It was ridiculous considering how much money was being spent on my education.
