Chapter 21 - A Plausible Excuse
"Please, just kill me already." Daman groaned and stood up from his chair. He stomped over to the refrigerator and grabbed a beer. He popped the lid off on the counter and chugged half the bottle down. Jesus.
"Daman it's just dinner. We've only done this so many hundreds of times." I rolled my eyes at his dramatic behavior.
"Well, I don't want dinner. I'm full," he crossed his arms.
"You haven't eaten all day!" I accused him. I knew this for a fact because he had been at work all day. Because it was Friday, I didn't have anything to do all day except stay home and study, and when I visited Daman for a quick lunch, it resulted in me watching him catch up on his endless pile of paperwork.
"Whatever."
"Daman, this is Silas we're talking about. How can you turn your back on your brother after he confessed his true self to you?" I set down five plates at the dinner table and walked towards the oven to take out the baked pasta dish I had cooked for us. Not only would Silas be coming over tonight, but Lisa would be joining him. I guess this was like their official engagement announcement slash chance for Daman and me to meet Lisa. After all, Silas would be vowing to spend the rest of his life with her.
"For fuck's sake, this isn't about him being gay!" Daman slammed his hand on the counter so loud that I almost dropped the tray of food.
"Why can't you understand that my brother, who I have always confided in, thought it'd be okay to hide the fact that he enjoys sucking--"
"Dad?" Leo interrupted Daman's fuming rage.
"Leonardo, go back up to your room." Daman didn't even turn around to acknowledge his son.
"Daman!" I gave him a dirty look before walking over to Leo. I could tell by the look on his face that something was wrong.
"What's wrong?" I knelt down so I could be eye-level with Leo.
"I don't feel good," he responded, his eyes glistening with tears. I could hear Daman sigh and place his beer in the sink. He walked past us and down the hallway probably headed to his office.
"Does your stomach hurt?" I questioned.
"Yes," he groaned and clenched the area.
"Uh oh. Maybe we should lay down, come on," I picked him up carefully and began to walk him upstairs. When we entered his bedroom, I helped him change into his pajamas and then helped him into his bed. I propped his pillows up, so he would be able to be in a sitting position.
"Stay here, I'm going to get you some medicine okay?" I instructed him, suddenly noticing how pale his face was becoming. "If you feel like you're going to throw up, just call me okay?"
"Valentina?" he stopped me.
"Yes?"
"Why is Dad mad?" Leo asked, his eyes wide with curiosity.
"He's not mad Leo. He's very tired from work, but I promise he's not mad." I semi-lied, not wanting to stress the little boy out.
"Okay." he accepted my words and looked away. I took that as my cue to exit. I rushed down the stairs and into Daman's office. When I saw that it was empty, I went back into the kitchen. Through the large glass window, I could see Daman sitting on the deck in the backyard, staring at the ocean waves.
I opened the sliding glass door and interrupted his thoughts, "Hellooo?"
"Yes?" he turned around and placed his glass of scotch on the table. As soon as I caught sight of the hard-liquor, my heart began to thump with fury. I understood that this wasn't a particularly pleasant moment for Daman, but I couldn't believe how selfish he was being. There were so many other more important things he should be worrying about, yet he was stuck thinking about the fact that he brother is into guys, which is a lot dumber than it sounds considering Daman wasn't even mad about the gay part. All he could focus on was the fact that it was kept a secret from him.
