With textbook precision my slender body wove a graceful pattern of circles, spins and hold-your-breath release moves between the high and low bars. i capped my performance with a spectacular dismount—and naturally, stuck my  landing.

"Wow', said an awed Betty –finally remembering to breath.

"Spectacular performance", remarked Coach Sam—wondering what this talent would mean for the Eastwood High School gymnastics team during the annual competition with the other rivals. Coach Sam is our PE coach as you must have guessed and he was always interested in the winning part of gymnastics.

"That", said a blonde girl in a red leotard "was some....tryout" then she grinned and added, "What else have you got?"

Whoa, I was quick to hear a challenge—though her tone of voice didn't exactly fit into that category.

"Well...this and that", i replied, I knew I had everything else gymnastic- wise.

But instead of the jealous reply i expected "excellent!" said the blonde girl in the red leotard. I'm Skyla but you can call me Sky and welcome to the team". And she meant it! Well if you count the smile and the hand she threw out towards me.

This threw me—sure-footed, confident, control freak—off balance. Welcome? c'mon, you can't possibly be glad someone showed up to outshine you! Can you?

Brilliant as I am at gymnastics, I'm not an expert at figuring out people. Actually i rarely tried. Most of my energy went into my athletic skills. I loved winning and took pride in always being the best. So I just assumed that everyone else felt the same way too. they did ,didn't they?
