I entered this world expecting to go into my mother's arms, something I had been thinking about for a while now. What I came to were blinding lights piercing through my eyelids and several speaking voices coming from any and all directions. I think my mom held for a few brief seconds before I was taken from her and she had been whisked away. I never saw her, though from what everyone tells me I inherited some of her greatest physical qualities. My unruly auburn hair and my almost black eyes are people point out the most.
Other than that I apparently look like my father, who I rarely see anymore. He's a scientist and is "on the reaches of a technological breakthrough". As if we need any more advancements. If I look at other multiverses in our time they are just working on robots. We are working on how to keep them from killing us, as there have been too many incidents already.
Why would anyone care, really? My world is unlike any other, now that the Queen has taken over Earth. They , the "aliens", came back in the 1900's, according to my history class I was given. She wanted to make Earth "perfect" so she came in and changed everything. Literally, nothing in this world is anywhere near similar to any other world I have ever heard. That's the story we all have been told for over a hundred years now.
One thing that she changed the most is how we "choose" our jobs. Before, apparently, people had to go to school for up to 13 years and then more if they wanted to go to this thing called "college". This college would give them a few pieces of paper with useless information and they had to make their own future. The Queen didn't like that about Earth so that system was one of the first to go, right after Earth's government which is something the teachers don't like to go into. Everyone now goes to school for the required ten years before getting their jobs chosen for them. You could be anything ranging from doctors and teachers all the way to waitresses and aspiring artists. This is all based on an algorithm that the Queen made up and the big computer techs use. Everything you have ever done is put into the computer as variables and it decides what you are. No hassle, no fuss.
My mom had a very special job, one only a few of the elite get. We call them the multiverse travelers. They go to the other multiverses and make sure everything is to happen as it should, no matter the circumstances. This could mean you have to be sure someone lives or dies. Make sure a war starts and ends the way it's supposed to. Make sure the right people are in the right place at the right time. After I was born my mom was immediately sent on a mission but because of her fragile state she was lost in the spaces between the multiverses. I have always wanted to meet her, my mom. I want to know what she was like and what it is like to have a mother's love. So for ten years I have been trying my very best to get the best grades, be the best member of society, and do my best in the practice tests that the teachers gave to determine what we could be if we kept going the way we were.
Now it's my time to discover if I am going to go find my mom or if everything I have worked for is all for naught. This is everything I have been thinking for the past several hours. I have to into that algorithm and I am dead tired. That's great, my entire life is gone! I'll never become a multiverse traveler and mom will be lost forever. I'll have failed dad. Wait, Dad has got to be home! He promised that he would here for my day.
I jumped from my bed and ran to my dresser. I was not going to miss this day and I wasn't going to let Dad miss it either. I pulled on my school uniform, which looked much better than the one I had seen in old pictures and in videos the multiverse travelers had taken and sent in. I wore a basic white polo, a gray blazer with watching slacks, black slip-on's, and a gray and red striped tie. Very formal, yes, but it was extremely comfortable. I checked my hair and decided a simple brush would have to suffice. They weren't doing pictures, so why worry about looking perfect? I, out of habit, slipped on Mom's locket while making my way out the door.
