‧‧‧‧‧‧‧‧‧‧‧‧Jake's POV‧‧‧‧‧‧‧‧‧‧‧‧

The endless sound of fireworks and people shouting woke me up with a start at 12:07 am. I turned my head away from the clock I've been looking at. Wow. I had slept for an hour and probably twenty minutes! Where is──

"Happy New Year!" A cheerful voice suddenly filled the room.

I glanced around and saw Jessica grinning at me with a plate of chocolate-chip cookies in one hand, and a tray containing two glasses of milkshake on the other.

"You want any help with that?" I immediately asked, standing up and walking over to her. But she shook her head at me.

"I'm okay with this. Just clear the table so I can put it down." she told me. I did what she told me to do and helped her put the tray down. Then she shoved a cookie in her mouth and shoved another one in mine, too.

"Happy New Year!" She repeated again, although it didn't sound so clear since her mouth was stuffed with bits of cookies. "How does it taste like?" she asked, smiling.

I didn't reply for a moment as I savoured the taste in my mouth. "It's delicious. Is this what took you so long in there?" She nodded proudly. "I'm impressed by it."

"Good. You should be. I did spend much effort on that." She giggled, then ate another piece. How cute, I thought. Then my eyes widened as I thought of that. No, Blaker... NO. Definitely absolutely NO! You aren't falling for this girl again.

"Something the matter, Jake?" Jessica asked me innocently, her eyes filling with concern.

"Nothing. I'm fine." I replied. I took another cookie and jammed it in my mouth.

Jessica laughed. "How delicious exactly are my cookies? You seem delighted with it." she said.

"I am always delighted with these cookies of yours, Jess. You must have also forgotten that I was the one who introduced the chocolate-chip cookies to you." I reminded her, smiling a bit at the memory.

"You were?" The impeccability in her voice made my smile fade. I sort of glared slightly at her. "I'm sorry. I─I─"

"Forgot?" I finished, annoyance rising in my voice. She nodded slowly, looking down. I sighed. "Look, it's okay. I wouldn't even expect you to remember that, anyway, since you clearly HAVE forgotten a lot of things about me, and probably about us."

"I'm sorry." She whispered, her voice shaking. "It's─It's not my fault I couldn't.... Oh nothing."

I shook my head at that. I didn't want to hear any of what she wanted to say since I figured out that it would just ruin my night.

We remained silent for a few minutes, just eating cookies and looking around us except at each other. The awkwardness here was unbearable for me. So I decided to break the silence.

"Hey─"

"Uh─"

We both stopped and looked at each other.

"You go first─"

We both stopped again, realizing that we were saying the same thing at the same time.

Then we dissolved into fits of laughter.

"O-Okay. You can go first." I said, trying to balance my laughter and what I was saying so she could understand me.
