There were police cars everywhere. My apartment building was like a crime scene. It technically was.
There was only one car in the beginning. I spoke to the officers and explained everything to them. They saw the cake and stated that it was a threat—which I already knew. They called in detectives to come search the place and try to find who it could have been. The only evidence they found was my broken living room window seal. Signs of forced entry.
Mike was there only a second after my drunkard friends had arrived. They had all been called by Sara after the first police car had arrived. They comforted me for a while before I decided that it was too late and they needed to go to work the following morning. They were reluctant, but left. Mike was the only one who stayed. He slept over that night.
The following day I woke up to the strong smell of coffee. I smiled in my sleep as I turned to look at the other side. I opened my eyes to only find that Mike was not there.
I sniffed the air, it was my favourite coffee. The only coffee that I owned actually. It had a strong aroma and the bitter taste would last long after I had finished my cup. My smile grew as I stretched my arms and stood up.
When I got to the kitchen I found Mike standing over the stove. I could smell eggs too. I wrapped my arms around his bare chest.
"You're making me feel bad." I said as I lay my head on his back. I could feel his evenly beating heart.
"You shouldn't. You need the energy to be a good boss." I chuckled as I let go of him and took out the milk from the fridge. "I also made coffee. I know how much you love that." I smiled as I poured the milk into a glass.
"You're so perfect, you know that?" He turned around and plated the eggs. When he was done he put the pan in the sink. He then walked to me and gave me a soft kiss on my lips. He moved away and then smiled at me.
"Only for you."

When I got to work nothing was fine. The phones seemed to all be ringing at once, and with the replies from my colleagues I knew that it was not the clients. Everyone was frantic as they kept on replying "no comment" and as soon as they hung up, the phone would start rininging again.
I rushed to my office, where the phone was also ringing. I answered it.
"S. Advertising, hello?"
"Did you like my surprise?" I paused. I did not know who was on the other line. They had masked their voice, so it sounded like no specific gender, or human being at that. "I'm talking about the cake." The voice said after my moment of silence.
"Who are you?" The voice laughed.
"Your worst nightmare." And then the line went dead. I stood frozen in my spot for a while with the phone still in my hand.
One colleague walked in. I did not pay attention to him.
"Sadie?" It was Jeremy speaking. He had recently started in the company. He walked closer towards me, sounding as worried as he looked. "Boss, are you okay?" I shut my eyes and took in a deep breath. Then I shook my head.
"No." I slowly put the phone down, still breathing deeply. "They're going to kill me." I said as I held onto the table, feeling like the world was tilting.
"What can I do?" I took in one last deep breath before I went to take a seat in my chair. I started to count in my head.
One. Two. Three.
