Naruto stared at the swelling of his father's cheek, wondering if his mother did this. He remembered his mother telling him that she did this to his father because she loved him.
Naruto couldn't understand hurting someone you love, regardless of what they had done.
His mother would threaten to leave with Naruto, forcing his father to comply with whatever she wanted. This would make Naruto cry, and she'd hit him until he stopped.
"Please, Kushina, he's just a child," his father would beg.
Naruto loved his mother, a lot, but now he wanted her gone.
"Your father is a bad man, I have to kill him," she'd whisper when she'd put him to sleep.
What did that even mean? His father wasn't a bad man, and his mother loved his father. Right?
So when his mother asked for him to bring a knife from the kitchen, the one they used for steaks, he thought nothing of it. How would a child know that this would cost him so much?
"Naruto, daddy is going to take a nap. Why don't you go to the park with Sasuke today?" his mommy suggested.
Naruto looked at the bed to see his father lying in a pool of red. He knew all too well what it meant, but he didn't want to make his mom furious.
Whenever he needed an escape, he'd hang out with Sasuke. With Sasuke, he could pretend his parents weren't fighting.
Naruto ignored his mother yelling at his father, running out of the house. Tears formed in his eyes, but he pushed that feeling back. He needed to stay positive.
His mother didn't like it when he cried.
"Mommy doesn't mean it. Daddy is fine. We're a happy family." Naruto said aloud as if saying it will make it true.
He watched the houses he passed by, wondering if happy families lived in them, or broken ones like his own.
The path to get to Sasuke's house was very familiar. Sometimes Naruto would walk up to his friend's house and see bruises on Sasuke's mother. Naruto would question Sasuke about what happened, but he'd insist it was nothing.
Naruto knew better than that.
Naruto stood in front of Sasuke's house, and he could hear loud voices from inside. Before he could approach the door, someone opened it from the other side.
A woman rushed out with a boy at her side.
"I'm taking Itachi with me!" The woman yelled.
Naruto recognized him as Sasuke's mother. Her eyes were swollen, and it reminded him of his father. Itachi was screaming at his mother to take his brother as well, but she ignored him.
Sasuke stood in the doorway, his father holding his shoulders. Naruto could tell Sasuke's mom and dad were having a bad day.
When Sasuke's father saw Naruto he told him to go play, and that he will take care of the problem.
"I hate you, you bastard!" Itachi cursed over and over again.
Naruto wondered what had happened now to make Itachi say such bad words."Come on Sasuke, let's go," Naruto urged, tugging at Sasuke's arm," Come on." Sasuke followed him, looking back so often to see what was happening.
Naruto smiled at his friend, trying to comfort him. He understood Sasuke's pain, and what it felt like to stand by and do nothing.
They silently walked, not one of them speaking to each other yet.
"What happened Sasuke?" Naruto finally asked.
Sasuke shook his head, not wanting to make a big deal out of it. In the back of his mind, he knew just how bad what his father did was. The screams for help, the creaking of the bed, the blood were a big deal.
He was too weak to do anything about it.
"I have something for you Sasuke," Naruto said, pulling Sasuke towards the playground.
Sasuke knew Naruto was leading him to the slide. They would go there, together, to escape, and be up there for hours talking about life.
Nothing bad could happen to them while they were up there. However, the moment they stepped down reality would hit them.
When they reached the top of the slide, Naruto reached into his pocket, pulling out a small ring. Sasuke gasped, admiring the beautiful ring. It had reminded him of the one his mother sometimes wore, with a small diamond in the middle.
What Sasuke didn't know was that it had belonged to Naruto's mother, given by his father, but they wouldn't need it anymore. His mom said it was worthless like his father. He didn't understand what she meant, but at least he got the ring.
"My mom told me when you want to be with someone forever you marry them. Marry me, Sasuke?" Naruto asked happily.
Sasuke didn't really know what to say. His parents were married, the same as Naruto's. He had seen what marriage did to people. As happy as he wanted to be, there was a part of him that was afraid.
He could hear his mom, now, and how she described it as fun at first while his dad said it was a pain.
Naruto wasn't like his parents, so this would be different. They would be there for each other, and they wouldn't hurt each other. They would stick by each other's side.
"Promise we won't be like our parents, and there won't be any tears, only laughter. Then I will marry you" Sasuke said.
He needed to know Naruto meant this. He wanted it to be a perfect marriage, one that would work out. A smile crept onto Naruto's face as he nodded his head up and down in excitement.
Naruto slipped the ring onto Sasuke's finger, immediately pulling his best friend into a hug. The ring would now symbolize how happy they would be together.
At that moment they weren't part of broken families. They were Sasuke and Naruto, best friends.
The screams of Sasuke's mom didn't reach him and the sirens of the police arriving at his house wouldn't be his problem. The pain of being with their actual families left and the warmness of this new family made them smile.
"I love you, Sasuke!" Naruto yelled out, not caring who heard him.
Sasuke smiled, deciding that he would feel what Naruto felt, and not care. He was happy to be 'married', and didn't want it to stop no matter what.
"I love you too, Naruto!" Sasuke yelled out, imitating his loud friend. A smile appeared on his face. A genuine smile.
