if there was one thing that ella liked about the city was walks. just walking was something that would always put her at peace. however, this time it had turned on her. unsure of the reason being the hand that was connected with her's or the type of day it had been. ella had completed her finals, but had not helped the fact that she was still 3,000 miles away from home. the holidays were slowly arriving but no excitement had been received. the walk was quite unpleasant for her opinion. the air was fresh but had been cramped up with awkward silence among the two. ella hadn't really decided why she had dragged her troubled boyfriend along this walk. maybe it was his presence that was all she wanted. she still walked, with slow steps, glancing up at him every now and then.

they had finally arrived at the place she thought she would enjoy with him. it was a little park outside of new york that had never been too crowded during the holidays. having a nice pond with a bridge, they headed over to hover the railing. the water had been frozen from the winter weather that seemed to take over half of the year. though, ella did not mind, it was a reminder of  a winter wonderland she once hoped to experience as a child.

"it's nice isn't it?" she spoke softly. calum shrugged, not affected by the view, "i've seen better but what else can you do when you live in a place like this."

ella  was taken back by is words but still put up a fight towards them, "well when its all you have, you find a way to appreciate it." calum stayed silent but shrugged again, "thankful im not from here then. who could live in a city like this? cold. gloomy. reminders of things that should be forgotten." he looked down at her, "the air is polluted. just like it's people." ella scoffed, seeing that australia's heat wasnt any better. but she felt for him. dark days bring dark memories and how could you escape that in a place like new york?

even if ella wasn't winning conversation she still loved how much intensity he spoke. "well ok," she leaned her head up to peck his cheek, "lets head back, my hands are freezing." at the sound of words, calum pulled his hands out of his jeans and intertwined their fingers. even with calum being as cold as he is towards ella, he still put enough effort into caring for her. he took an inetrest in her that he would only show once in a blue moon. it brings comfort to ella knowing that there is a soft spot in him.

a touch of his hand and ella's palms had felted more heated than before. as they started to walk back she stared at the ground where she focused on how it felt to have their hands intertwined. a thought of reassurance ran through her mind, squeezing her hand in his, where he squeezed back giving her a small nod and smile. faking that nothing was wrong.
