"I'm addicted to the magic
and the glow of the city lights
I felt it in my veins
just didn't know how to say it right. "- Colors, OneRepublic
Nathan and I had successfully weaved through the maze of the academy's halls. We stood outside on the freshly cut grass, next to a bed of lilacs and violets. Mercifer was mostly quiet, apart from the occasional blast of electricity, or small tornado taking a detour down the streets. I saw a green-haired woman with magnets attached to her clothes disappear into a building, and a black and white dog race into an alleyway, howling after a screeching cat with two tails.
Mercifer was what the outside world would call strange- no doubt, a cat with two tails would freak anyone out. Mercifer was also what the outside world would call a mega-city, the majority of our buildings being skyscrapers. And, as the name implies, they scraped the sky. As impressive as the skyscrapers are, they are no match for the academy, or its famous other half- the arena.
"The place where we're going isn't in Mercifer," instructed Nathan. "We'll have to go to the outskirts. Preferably we should take the forest path- I don't want to run into any wolves, they like to mark their territory near the beaches."
I would have said that if we were attacked by wolves, then I could just kill them with one wave of my hand. But, it seems that wolves are the only creatures immune to our abilities.
We ducked past bright street signs, our feet slid on the slippery cement. It had rained recently, causing the city to smell of cold, icy river water. Nathan stood out against the dull greys, his yellow raincoat like a beacon. Once we entered the forest, he looked like an exotic flower- the kind that could eat you alive.
The forest was mainly pine trees and cherry bushes. The trees weren't very tall, and the cherry bushes were scattered around like weeds. I kicked a few pine cones at Nathan as we walked, they hit him square in the back of his legs.
"Stop that," he grumbled, eyeing me with a glare of vile hatred. Safe to say I didn't kick any pine cones at him again. I couldn't risk it, knowing that at any second, Nathan Darkwood could release his crazy earth powers. We strolled deeper into the forest, where the trees were the thickest. The sun began to set a lovely shade of red.
"Damn it," Nathan muttered, noticing the sunset. "I've definitely missed platinum class by now."
Through the branches of the trees I could make out the outline of a house. It looked to be about seven stories high, with a pointed roof and a warped chimney.
"Lovegrove's hut," I said, breathless. "So you think it was Lovegrove who stole the photos?"
Nathan shrugged, and pulled grass seeds from his socks. "Yes?"
