It was about midnight. And a winter storm was blowing out side of my window. I woke up with a jolt after a nightmare of my mother. Arthur woke at the same time, sitting up and staring at the door. He slept across the room on a small mattress on the floor. "You ok?" he asked quietly. I answered him and said," I'm fine, just a nightmare." "alright," he said, " just wake me up if you need anything." we laid back down and I fell asleep. Arthur hardly ever sleeps, only when he knows we are safe; then he will sleep very lightly.

Morning came quickly and I woke up to Arthur sitting at the end of my bed. "Good morning." he said while standing up and returning to his mattress. "Hi" I said while sitting up and trying to clear my eyes. "Is mom home? Or is she working yet." He smiled and said,"No, she left an hour ago, you really slept in." "Oh." I replied quietly. I got out of bed and walked to my closet and went to the restroom. once I finished getting dressed I returned to my room and Arthur went to his room. I waited for him to return and we walked downstairs to the kitchen. "What sounds good for breakfast?" Arthur asked. "I don't know. how about toast. I think we have bread and some butter. We need to go to the store today." Arthur nodded and got the toaster from the cabinet. I went and got the bread from the drawer and the butter from the small fridge. We sat at the table and ate silently. all was calm and we were safe, mother wasn't home. We finished up our food and did the dishes and returned to my room. "What should we do today?" I asked him. " He sighed and said, "Well, we need to go to the store today, I've saved up some money and I thought ,since mom isn't here, we could go-" he was cut off by the loud slamming of the front door and the stomping of heavy feet up the stairs.
