I opened the door to a huge room, decorated in gold furnishings and a giant four poster bed. I stood still, taking in the grandeur of the room. Even though I didn't always keep up with the latest interior design trends, I definitely knew that this room was furnished in the latest style.
I walked to my bed and put my suitcases down on the floor. They were heavy and they had started to hurt my arms a little, even though I had been lifting weights.
I trailed my fingers daintily over the comforter and the soft sheets that covered my bed, tracing the elaborate patterns that covered the hem and the center of the comforter. One particular pattern came to my attention...
It was the pattern of a Moon. The exact same pattern that was on my family heirloom book.
I narrowed my eyes. Why would a pattern from my family heirloom book be on a bedspread at Headquarters? A chill enveloped me as I thought of the possibilities. I thought about what my father had said back at the house. How my grandfather had been documenting secrets of the General for decades, and how the General was bound to find revenge in some way. I knew that this couldn't be a coincidence.
As I unpacked my clothes I thought about my team members. I really hoped that they weren't complete jerks because if I had to put up with idiots for the rest of my life it was going to stink.
There was a knock on the door.
"Come in!" I said.
The door opened and a woman with bouncy red curls came in. "Hello Miss James. My name is Catherine and I will be your personal assistant up until your departure. If you need anything don't hesitate to let me know."
I blinked at her accent. It was a very crisp yet warm tone. "Uh sure. I was wondering if you could find something out for me."
Catherine smiled brightly. "I can try."
I walked over to my bedspread and pointed to the pattern. "What does this pattern symbolize?"
She looked cornered and paled. "Unfortunately, I am not allowed to disclose that information. In fact this never should have been here in the first place." She straighten before she looked me in the eye and winked. "Now it's time for me to get you dressed for the ball.'
"Ball!?" I yelped. "Um I don't dance. Besides I didn't think we did balls anymore."
She laughed. "Only General Ajax really does them anymore. They're too expensive for most people anymore. As for you attending, you are required to go as the Captain. All of your team will be attending and it will be the first time that you will get to meet as a team.
I moaned loudly. "Just great. Can you at least allow me to take a nap first?" I asked plopping down on my bed.
"I'm sorry but we have to get started right now. I need to do your hair and makeup, not to mention a last minute fitting on your dress." She said pulling me up out of bed.
When did I get fitted for a dress?
"What time does the ball start?" I asked.
"Well guests are already arriving, but it starts at seven."
