Chapter two: Mixed Signals
I woke up the next morning in a great mood.
Not.
By the time I had everything around and was ready to leave, my Mom had mentioned twenty-three times how proud she was that I was selected for this mission. I was pretty much done.
"Mum!!! For the last time!! Shut it!!!" I yelled at her.
My mum looked at me in shock. "Luna! I was just stating that I was proud of you!"
I closed my eyes. "Sure. I doubt it."
She pursed her lips but didn't say anything.
My Dad came up behind her and put a hand on her shoulder looking at me. "Honey I know you're stressed about this mission but your mum and I are worried about you. Our baby girl is leaving us."
My shoulders slumped. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have yelled at you Mum. I just..."
She wrapped her arms around me, something that I never, ever seen her do.
"I know Honey." She said brushing the hair off my face. "I know."
I stood frozen with my arms hanging limply at my sides, not sure what to do. My Mom had never hugged me before.
Diana saved me.
"Hey little sis. Where's my hug?" She joked.
I quickly detached myself from my mum and went over to hug her.
I closed my eyes breathing in her homey smell of lemons.
She spoke in my ear quickly. "Luna listen to me. Don't trust anybody. No matter how nice they may seem. Headquarters is full of moles."
"How do you know?" I breathed.
"I have inside sources." She whispered. "Just promise me you won't trust anyone."
I pulled back and nodded slightly.
Then she spoke aloud. "I put a note in your pack Lu. You can read it on the way there."
There was a pause.
"I'm going to miss you." My voice broke.
"I'll miss you too." Diana said.
She pulled back from the hug and looked me in the eye. Remember. She mouthed.
I nodded.
"Luna could I speak to you for a few moments?" My Dad asked me.
I followed him to his office and shut the door behind me.
I was engulfed in a hug as soon as the door shut. "Oh my baby girl. Why did it have to be you?" He whispered against my hair.
I hugged him tighter. "I don't know Dad. But don't worry about me. I've got a plan."
"I'm not worried about you. I'm worried that they will change you."
"I won't let that happen." I said.
He kissed my head. "I know I haven't always been such a good father, but I want you to know that I love you, so much Luna." He whispered. "Know that every moment you are up there in space, I'll be thinking of you."
"I love you too Dad."
I heard a faint yell in the other room.
"I think they're here to pick me up." I said walking to the door and looking back at him.
