🎶 LET'S DO THE TIME WARP AGAINNNNNN 🎶A/N: Greetings, sunflower muffins 😂 (you only know that story if you follow me on Instagram xD) I'm sorry I haven't updated in a while, I've been really busy. I'll try to update more often 😘
Maddie's POV:
"Maddie, that girl didn't do this to Will. It was his choice to get the knife, and Gilan wanted her to come with him," Dad told me. "I know, but she stole Will's attention from me. I think she was trying to distract him so I would mess up," I said.
I knew it wasn't true, but I needed someone to blame all this on. Even though Will had felt better a few hours ago, he was sinking into sickness again. The town and castle healers were away for a few weeks on a joint mission, and no one else we knew had any medicinal knowledge.
Even Halt was in Hibernia with Pauline, taking a vacation. I had been so exhausted from the emotional stress of the past few days that I had just fallen asleep on the couch while sharpening my knife, and it seems Will was pretty angry with me.
"I'm sorry, Dad. I just want Will to live," I whispered to him. "Whoa there, he's not going to die! It's just a cold, Maddie. He'll be fine, it's just that I'm worried it could turn into a fever, which tends to be uncomfortable, you know?" Dad reassured me.
Of course. I was being silly. People always recover from colds.
Kai's POV:
"Kai?" I heard Gilan ask, and I was brought abruptly back to reality. "Could you see if you can find any firewood, I said." Gil was watching me with an amused look on his face. Amused was the exact opposite of what I was feeling, however.
I sometimes got flashbacks like this, but they didn't happen as much as they used to. I sighed. "Alright," I said, and started off into the woods. When I did find firewood, I hacked it so hard that splinters flew everywhere and some birds took off from a nearby branch.
After a while, I thought I should probably be quieter, so I slowed down my chopping.
Gilan's POV:
Crack. Crunch. At first I startled, then settled down as I realized the noise was just Kai, taking out her pent-up frustration on the poor firewood. We were camped right outside a village, so no one dangerous should be around. I decided to let her get it out of her system.
I don't think she believed me when I told her this wasn't her fault. I relaxed, laying back against a fallen log. When I opened my eyes, Kai was back and had gotten a fire started. "I'm sorry, I had no idea that I would fall asleep," I said apologetically.
Then I realized the girl around the fire wasn't Kai. I tried to move, but I had been tied to the log and it had been staked to the ground. "Kai!" I yelled desperately. The girl at the fire turned around and ran toward me.
"Captain said if you made a sound I would have to gag you." She smiled cruelly and stuffed a filthy rag into my mouth. "Where's Kai?" I muffled, but I knew she couldn't understand me. "Quiet," the lady said. "Halloween will start soon."
Halloween... of course. Hallows Eve. But that was a long-forgotten holiday, a holiday of devil-worshippers... oh, no. These must be the sack-people. Or their followers who had come to avenge them. I was an idiot for letting Kai make so much noise, and now they probably had her tied up somewhere.
Third Person's POV:
Kai waited somberly in the main caravan's trailer. She had been told stories about the Roamers, and she thought these people might be like them. Except for the fact that they worshipped the devil.
Meanwhile, the leader was in his caravan, thinking about what to do with his prisoners. He had given up banditry long ago, choosing instead to join this "religion" that worshipped the devil and kidnapped children and youth to work for them during their whole lives.
His serving boy of about 11 (he had long forgotten his name) entered his trailer without knocking, a habit the others had tried long to rid of him. "What?" the leader snapped. "Master Douglas, the attendants are ready for you to see the prisoner now."
Grumbling to himself, Douglas got up and shoved past the boy roughly on his way out of the trailer. A girl. They had captured a girl and they expected him to care? "Follow me, boy. Now." My name is-" the boy started, but Douglas didn't let him finish. "I don't care what your blasted name is. Hurry up!"
Kai's POV
"The boy is going to get the Master. You wait here. Stay," the attendant told me. This girl couldn't be much older than me, yet she was treating me like an animal. As far as I knew, the tribe had taken Gil to another trailer, and he was safe. I hoped. My attendant backed out of the room, keeping a close eye on me.
Just then, the leader of the devil-worshippers threw the door open. I wondered if he through he was majestic, because he just looked stupid. The kilt didn't help. His young serving boy scampered into the room behind him fearfully.
I thought there was something familiar about that little boy, but I couldn't tell. He was staring at his small, dirty bare feet. "It was justified by one of my people that you were the girl who was captured in Wensley village the other night. But you gained the help of three Rangers and escaped."
"Is it true that my men ended up in prison?" the leader said all of this in a rush, as if he had practiced every word. "Yes," I snarled, "Your 'men' tried to sacrifice me."
"Ah, but that's what we do. You understand that, surely?"
"Surely not." I was making him angry now. "Let me go."
"We can't do that. Halloween will start in a few hours, and you are our honored guest!"
"I can't exactly be honored if I'm dead now, can I?"
"You must pay for what you did to my men. Now, I must busy myself with preparations."Or an early meal, I thought, by the number of loops in his belt were let out. "An hour before the ceremony starts, you will be dressed and made up," the leader said. "Your attendants will help you rehearse your lines. Come, boy," he said as he turned on his heel out of the trailer door.
Only then did the boy look up at me. When he did, my heart gave a jolt of shock. "Ivan?" I whispered.
I know I promised no cliffhangers, but I take that back now 😂. This is really fun. I know Halloween is over, but I'm still gonna keep writing this 👻. I'm so glad I finally found a way to bring another piece of drama in 😊!
