'For anything worth having one must pay the price; and the price is always work, patience, love, self-sacrifice - no paper currency, no promises to pay, but the gold of real service.' – John Burroughs

A scowling guard.

A spiteful pack.

An indifferent beta.

And an absentee alpha.

I was living the pack dream.

All that missing was the dark clouds and thunderstorms.

Unfortunately for me, the weather had been at its absolute peak.

With clear skies, and warm temperatures; the summer had already made its appearance forcing even the most hardened of hearts to venture outside for a quality tan. I for one couldn't resist the urge to sink my bare-feet into the soft green grass, while I watched Sophia play with the rest of the pack kids.

A month had passed since coming here, and the atmosphere was still as hostile as the first day.

The guard assigned to babysit me, as a guise to watch and report my every move to make sure I didn't make off with the alpha's daughter, had acquired a permanent scowl each time he was in my presence.

The pack gave up trying to be subtle with their jabs, and simply took every opportunity to fault some aspect of me when in their presence.

The beta barely gave a rat's ass on what the pack said regarding me. As long as no form of violence was sort, he couldn't ass himself with carrying out pack law on behalf of the oppressed. If anything, I was sure the only reason he gave a shit that no harm befell me was due to the alpha.

Despite his absence, he had left orders regarding my stay within the pack, which I was sure included my safety.

I scoffed.

He was really one obtuse alpha. Regardless of the strength of his pack, he really was ignorant to the obvious disregard of his orders.

Not that I was complaining, or anything. I had already accepted my fate. Long before coming to this pack.

I had realised the dynamics of such situations, and the obvious hierarchy that comes along with my prior lifestyle.

I was at the absolute bottom. Nowhere near the omegas; and they were the runts of the pack.

The fact that I stood higher than most of the pack members, was enough to irk some, if not all of them.

I sighed, releasing a long deep breathe.

The sun shone bright and high reflecting off the blue waters of the little pool a few feet away from where I was sat. A small waterfall drained into the clear blue pool, with a cave at the back of the falling stream.

I had found this little chunk of heaven when on a run one evening, and quickly claimed it as my spot.

I was currently sat in the soft green grass surrounding the pool watching Sophia as she splashed about in the pool with Adam, better known as my scowling bodyguard.

The two got on surprisingly well, as long I was as far away from the vicinity as possible.

The fact that Sophia was fond of him, and he was more than ready to protect her rather than me, was more than enough reason to ignore his lack of enthusiasm in my presence.

Play time in the pool, as Sophia had dubbed it, had become a norm for every sunny Sunday afternoon. Clad in her pink frilly bikini she would practically drag me here to not miss out on an opportunity to splash Adam, and defeat him in another round of 'who can splash the most'.
