“There’s so many! Rian, what do we do?” Alice asks. I stare over the city, the streets quiet except for the sounds of groaning and hissing. “I don’t know, but how about we just skirt around it? You know, just avoid them entirely?” I suggest, trying not to look as scared as I am. There are way too many of them to fight, even with our new recruits from Elder’s Landing. We got forty -three of them in all, each packing an assault rifle, food, water, camping gear, and fresh medical supplies they took from one of the military outposts near Elder’s Landing. That makes fifty-four of us, including me and the ten from Dallas. Snow died a few weeks ago, and Luke doesn’t talk as much as he used to. I tried to cheer him up, but that only made it worse. He walks behind everyone taking up sweeper duty. His job is to walk a few yards behind everyone else and make sure no one follows us. He’ll shoot anyone not from the group and whistle to us to say “You’re welcome.”  So far, there has only been one whistle. That’s too many.

I look to the sky and close my eyes. I see Shadow smiling at me with joyful eyes, her hair flowing and her skin glistening. I open my eyes for a second, smiling, then close my eyes again. I see her bloodied face from my dream the first night at Elder’s. I open my eyes then almost fall over with a yelp. I turn away and walk off, trying to hide my tears. I obviously didn’t do too well, because Alice walks up, concern making lines in her face. “Rian? You okay?” she asks. I shake my head no, because it’s too late to hide it. We walk in silence ahead of the group for about half an hour before she breaks it. “Was it Shadow?” I nod yes, and she does as well, then looks down. “It’ll get better, I promise,” she says softly, like a big sister reassuring her little brother. Like at Elder’s Landing. We both know it won't get better. “God, I hate this world,” I say in a far off voice. “I know. I do too.” It won't get better.
