“Will you hurry up Kana-chan?!” I heard Shikamaru yell in front of me while we were hopping off tree branches.
“I’m sorry!!” I shouted back. I didn’t mean to be so slow. I was thinking abou---ouff!! I hit my head. I looked up to see Shikamaru standing above me shaking his head. I must have bumped into a tree. I put my hand behind my head and gave him an innocent smile…
“Sorry Shikamaru..” I said, while giggling nervously. He just shook his head and held out a hand, helping me get up from my fall.
“You really are bothersome.” He said as he continued to hop through the forest. I looked down at my feet, ashamed. Shikamaru always called me bothersome. Am I really that much of a bother??
“You coming?” He said bored. I nodded and followed him and the rest of the group while we continued on our mission.
Our mission was to scout Sound village, and hopefully get some information on Orochimaru’s whereabouts. Sound ninja were very dangerous, so we had to be careful. I am very careful.
Really! I am! It’s not my fault I’m very clumsy.
Usually I can count on Shikamaru to help me when I do something stupid by accident, but lately he’s been really distant…and mean. I looked over to him. Why are you acting so strange Shikamaru? You’re the one person I know who is always calm, cool and collected. Who am I going to count on to sit with me in silence under a shady tree? Who am I going to play Shogi and get owned with? I shook my head to clear those unhappy thoughts and continued to travel in the direction of Sound, careful not to run into any more trees on the way.
Suddenly, I saw Shikamaru put up a hand, signaling everyone to stop. He turned his head and looked around, then turned to me.
“Don’t you think it is too quiet?” He asked. I gasped. He was right! Whenever we went on missions that involved entering enemy territory there were always tons of traps…that I usually fall for…I hung my head…again.
“Kana???” He said again. I looked up to him, unable to read the expression written across his face. And it wasn’t his usually ‘you-are-such-a-burden-to-me-Kana’ look. I nodded trying to rid my mind of sad thoughts.
“You’re right, it seems there should be more traps present.” I said, trying to sound smart like Shikamaru.
He gave me a weird look, but then nodded in agreement. He then turned to everybody. “There are most likely ninjas around if there are no traps, because traps are used most when a ninja himself isn’t present. Be extra careful.” He said, turning to me while saying the last sentence.
I scrunched up my face and hung my head, upset. I am a bother after all…
“Kana-chan! Look out!” I looked up to see the worried Shikamaru pushing my aside while avoiding the incoming kunai that was flying my way. I gasped. It would have been a critical hit if he hadn’t pushed my out of the way.
“My my, aren’t you a pretty one?” I heard a sly voice say behind me. I turned around to see a ninja wearing a sound forehead protector. Oh no! I gasped, but before I knew it he had grabbed me around the waist and held a kunai to my throat.
“If you don’t want to see this pretty lady get hurt I suggest you all leave!” The man said, tightening his grip on me. I watched my teammates look shocked and angry, especially Shikamaru. I felt tears form in my eyes as I fought the urge to cry.
I can’t cry. Not here. Then it would just prove that I am just another useless burden. Just like what Shikamaru thinks of me.
I stamped my foot on the man’s foot and elbowed him in the gut to push his body away from mine. Just as he fell back his Kunai scraped my neck and my arm causing me to fall down. My vision went slightly blurry. Was the kunai poisoned? I felt faint, and next thing I knew, it went dark. Completely dark.
