The Mermaid And The Sailor (2013)
By: Mark White

A long forgotten mermaid,
So talented and bright.
Once caught by a sailor,
One dark and dreary night.

On the ship they cheer,
For the beasts death grew near.
At first light she would be slain,
Unfortunately to cause a lot of pain.

But one sailor had a thought,
One which could not be bought.
Love struck the sailor,
He would not be her slayer.

So that night when all had gone to bed,
He crept out, his head full of dread.
If he was caught that would be it,
That crime of which he would commit.

He took out his sword and with a swing of his blade,
Cut the mermaid loose, to which she dismayed.
He told her it's ok and he was here to help her,
She looked on curiously as it was quite a blur.

He held out his hand for her to reach,
Reluctantly she began but let out a screech.
The pirates had awoken,
Not for the poor sailor to be misspoken.

They questioned his actions, of which he replied,
"It was love and nothing more, I would have gladly died".
To which the Captain drew his sword,
As the Mermaid jumped overboard.

With this they started to fight,
Swords clattering in the dead of night.
A sword here and a sword there,
The Mermaid was gone, away from this nightmare.

The sea was rough as could be,
To which the sailor began to flee.
He ran and jumped off the ship,
Not that it was a leisurely dip.

Water surrounded him everywhere,
But then he thought "I do not care".
The Mermaid was free,
That's all he cared about, all he could see.

As the water filled his lungs,
Blackness came over in tones.
He woke up on a beach,
To the sound of most wonderful speech.

"Thank you" a woman's voice called out,
It was the mermaid without a doubt.
She'd saved him from the sea,
Was this their destiny?

"I love you" he said without thought,
The mermaid smiled it's what she sought.
"I love you too, my captor to be",
As they slowly kissed under the palm tree.

Days end and years passed,
The Mermaid and the Sailor together at last.
Mermaid and Merman, you could say, sharing the sea,
After all, it was their destiny
