It was late in the night, around four thirty in the morning, and I was finally climbing into the warming comfort of our bed. Jon was already in bed asleep, hours before me. His chest rose and fell with each steady breath he took.I slipped into our shared bed, trying not to stir him awake. Jon was facing away from me, his back to me, sound asleep. From what I could see in the darkness, Jon looked so content with the world in his slumber.
My hands reach out for his in the pitch dark. The open window breathes in cool air, the night and its calming silence putting me at ease. My fingertips touch his, and my body instantly feels warm. A tired smile creeps up my face. I would look over to Jon, but he's sleeping and it's too dark to see. My fingertips then latch onto his hand, and soon my hand is holding his tightly, and my other arm reaches over and wraps around his chest.
My nose scrunches into my arm and I feel Jon breathing faster, meaning he's awake. "I'm sorry I woke you up, babe." I whisper into the night's dead air.
I heard him laugh quietly as his body turns to face me, our hands still intertwined, whilst our other hands wrapped around each other.
"It's fine," Jon said in a raspy voice and he kissed my head. I move my face closer to his chest to cuddle. He was drawing shapes with his index finger lightly on my midback, sleepily cooing the three words I constantly crave to hear for reassurance; "I love you."
I can hear his soothing heartbeat which causes me to softly giggle. His right hand, which was wrapped around me, moves up my back to my head. Jon began to play with my hair. His fingers entangled in my raven locks, massaging my scalp with his fingertips lightly.
I soon fell asleep next to the love of my life, petting my hair and kissing my head softly, listening to his steady heartbeat go thud-thud, a song I'll hear in my dreams.
"I'm glad you finally came to bed, Shawn."
