Caine woke sitting upright in the medical wing of The Base. Her left arm and chest ached and she pulled back the thin papery sheets to reveal her broken body almost blue with bruises. She winced and lay back down, the hard pillows starting to make her back ache. Soon Dr. Morose noticed her state of consciousness and came rushing over. She checked Caine's arm and began to re-bandage it. As Morose peeled back the old bandage, Caine saw what were the mangled remains of her lower arm. It was almost unrecognisable, it was so black with bruising. Her bone had been fractured in several places and the sharp edges were poking out of her broken skin. Her skin was flaky and dry from the bandages and there was dead skin beginning to flake everywhere. Morose set calmly to work beginning to attach Caine's arm to several tubes full of clear liquid. Once these were attached, Caine was given three tiny little pills, and their powerful anaesthetic got to work quickly. Caine's body soon became numb and she watched in disgust as Morose and several other nurses and staff worked to re-set her arm. It was so weird, seeing the blood and bone but with no pain whatsoever.
Suddenly Mr Bleak's tall figure stepped through the medical curtains surrounding her bed. He looked very grave.
"Caine", he said, his voice sounded as if he was speaking underwater to Caine, "I came to see how you were doing, but the doctors here seem to be making fine work on your injuries. I shall check back in a few hours, but just so you know the... creature, who did this to you is in a... eh... secure, location.", and with that he left. Caine sat on her bed, the doctors still working steadily at her arm. Why had he been so hesitant to tell her about the man? He was such a mystery, Mr Bleak, as was the man. She had been dreaming about him for years, but still had gotten no closer to knowing his name... or what he was.
