Chapter One

How do I start this? Once upon a time, there was a girl called Arianna who pulled Excalibur out of the stone?

Or do I start it like this: Every hundred years, a boy age 12-18 is picked to become the Champion of the realm by pulling out Excalibur out of the Stone?

I kinda liked the last one. Except this time, SPOILER ALERT: a GIRL pulled Excalibur out of the Stone. That girl is me, Arianna Henrydaughter or as I like to be called: Ari.

I'm the youngest daughter of Chief Henry Larason and Mary Tylerdaughter. I have an older sister, Angela, twin brothers Daniel and Phillip and a little brother, Joshua.

Daniel is a troublemaker while Phillip is as sweet as an angel. Joshua is 9 years old, Daniel and Phillip are 16 years old. Angela is 20 years old and is getting married tomorrow. I'm 15.

Maybe I should start with a little history: Every hundred years, Excalibur or the Sword in the Stone falls out of the sky into a random town. All the boys( originally it was all the children) ages 12-18 try to pull the sword out of the Stone. The first person in history to do this was the famous King Arthur.

Since only boys have pulled out the sword, only the boys would be able to try to pull it out. People say that only the reincarnation of King Arthur can draw out the sword. They always help the kingdom or save the world from an impending doom.

I remember when the Stone fell out of the sky today. I was in the plaza when it happened. We were watching the sky, seeing a large object falling from the heavens. We quickly got out of the way as it crashed into the middle of the Plaza with a loud crash and sent us flying backwards with the impact shock.

The Elders had made the decision immediately: sent word to the Capitol and get all boys 12-18 in their best clothes to try and pull out the sword and that's where I am now. In my bedroom, getting squeezed into a corset and my Sunday best clothes: a navy blue dress to compliment my dark blue eyes, black shiny shoes and white socks with a clean white apron over the dress. Then Mother tried to dress up my wild curls into a neat bun but after thirty minutes of twisting and pulling, she gave up and braided it into a messy red braid down my back.

Daniel and Phillip were dressed in identical outfits: white shirts, a black vest and black trousers. Except Daniel had his unbuttoned and hadn't brushed his hair back, leaving curly brown curls over his dark blue eyes--the same ones I had-- which made girls squeal at him. I usually just rolled my eyes while it happened.

Daniel sniggered at my outfit and I glared my eyes at him and put my hands on my hips. Don't start with me, big brother or you're going to be on the ground, cradling your balls!!

He gave me a troublemaker grin while Phillip rolled his eyes.

" Eight am and he's already making trouble!" he muttered under his breath. I managed to keep a straight face and followed Mother to the Plaza... for the second time today.

We found a spot to sit comfortably and Angela and me chattered about her fiancee, Roger. I played with the leaking curls of my braid as I watched the Elders come in and sit down to watch.

" Boys age 12-18, line up here please!" yelled someone in the middle of the Plaza, standing a little away from the Stone.

Daniel smirked at me confidentially and said," I'll pull Excalibur out, you'll see!"

" I'll believe it when I see it, big bro but go ahead and make a fool of yourself, trying to pull it out!" I taunted him. His eyes went dark and then he kissed me on the cheek.

Phillip kissed me on the cheek and I whispered in his ear," FYI, I'm voting for you. Excalibur should belong to someone who's kind and thoughtful... not someone who's mean and causes a ton of trouble like Daniel."

He smiled and patted me on the head. Joshua sat on my knee and I pulled him tightly to me as we watched the competition. The first guy in line was Adam Breeson, the blacksmith's son. He was seriously fit with huge muscles, long black hair tied into a ponytail and dark eyes.

He gave his name to the person who crossed off a name on the list and nodded for him to go ahead. Adam strode forward and put his hand on the hilt of the sword and pulled.

It stuck. He pulled harder but nothing happened.

" Sorry, boy. Next!"

The boys diminished. No one seemed to be able to draw it. Soon it was Phillip's turn. Some of the girls quietly giggled and he tried to pull it out. Nothing. The girls who'd giggled looked relieved.

Next was Daniel. " Daniel Matildason," Daniel said, confidently, flicking his hair from his eyes.

I rolled my eyes as he strode forward and put his hand on the hilt. He tried to pull it but it stuck. I smiled slightly. He pulled harder but it won't budge.

" OK, you're done, Daniel," said the man. Daniel grimaced and some girls giggled. It went quickly. Each family when one of their sons came forward, held their breath and leaned forward but it stayed the same. Disappointment was shown on the family member's faces as none of them were able to pull out the sword.

Soon, it was the last guy, Ronald Francesson. And everyone was happy that it was finally over. He walked up confidently and pulled on the sword. Nothing. Ron tugged harder and harder, using all his arm muscles to try and get the sword out.

After two minutes, Ron gave up and yelled," It won't budge!!"

Then everyone exploded into whispers.
