Chapter 19
I stood at the bottom of the steps after Rory left just watching the door. After a minute I turned and ran up the steps to Laurens room. She was already in bed. I changed quickly and crawled in on the opposite side. She rolled over to look at me in the dark. My stomach clenched a bit as the smell of Rory took over me. I was in his shirt. I took a deep breath and exhaled loudly, his smell choking me, anxiety taking over me.
"Are you alright?" Lauren whispered to me.
"Yeah" I nodded my head but she just rolled her eyes at me. She knew I was lying.
"So Spirit, huh?"
"Yep, awesome right?"
"Definitely."
"You can see evil?"
"Yeah, evil people, evil intentions, anything bad really. I'm still working on it. I need some time to explore it a bit more."
"Stay away from Athalia then. She'll break your evil meter."
She laughed. "She probably would. So you have a Protector?"
"It's pretty crazy. I feel like I haven't talked to you in so long Lauren. My life is so different right now. Everything has changed so fast. It's hard to wrap my head around it all."
"Well we have time now so shoot. Tell me everything."
I smiled at her. This is what best friends are for. I caught her up on everything that had happened to me in the past couple of days , not leaving anything out of course. I sighed heavily when I was done. I felt so relieved to have talked about all of that. Then she told me all about what she could read from Rory.
"The first time I met him in the school parking lot, you remember?"
I nodded my head.
"I immediately got this bad feeling from him, like he was really bad, really, really bad Lil, but then it was like something changed in him. It was like a shield had been lifted or a new door opened. I could feel just how good he was, but it was only towards you. It kind of freaked me out so I asked around about him all day and I did not like what I heard. I thought you were freaking crazy for dating him. But when I saw you two later that day it was like he was softening around the edges so I didn't say anything. I kind of studied him, and every time, he was better. Less angry and mad. Your changing him Lily. You're making him better" she finished softly.
My breathing hitched and I just nodded my head. I couldn't speak. I was speechless. I was having as big of an effect on him as he was having on me. I smiled a tiny bit as I replayed her words in my head. 'You're making him better.' I was so glad I could take some of his pain away because he was helping me so much. He was my rock right now, my guiding light in this dark maze of craziness.
