"Hurry up, Robin! The new neighbours have invited us to dinner at their house. Are you even listening to me?" My mum yelled up the stairs at me. I was listening to my music really loudly. I paused it and walked out of my room. Why does my mum always try to fit in with the new neighbours? It's so sad and annoying. "There you are, sweetheart. Come on now or we'll be late." At this 'dinner' the new neighbours have arranged, there will be multiple families there to welcome them. I have social anxiety, so I hate being around a lot of people and social situations E.g. parties and gatherings. We knocked on the door and a plump woman with a big smile greeted us. "Welcome Mrs...erm.."
"Mrs Olson. I brought some brownies for desert is that ok?"
"Absolutely! My name is Miss Kean. Is this your daughter? She's beautiful!"
I smiled and said thanks but my mum barged in and said "isn't she gorgeous?! Is there anyone else who her age here? Maybe she could socialise with new people." She emphasised the word 'socialise'.
"I have a son called Matt who just turned 16, he's upstairs on the left. I'll introduce you to him shortly."
So my mum and Miss Kean were having a deep conversation as I shuffled my iPod again and again. Mrs Kean finally noticed my boredom and smiled at me "follow me. I'll show you to Matt's room."
I stepped inside their house and it was amazing. The kitchen smelt like roast dinner and there were scented candles everywhere. "So, how old are you?"
"I'm about to turn 16 in two months."
"Ah I see. Well, there's Matt's room on the left...oh for gods sake." She stormed into his room and gave him a telling off "Matthew Kean, this is the third time today. Turn your music down or don't play it at all. I have someone here to keep you company."
"Who is it? Another preppy girl who you've randomly invited to keep me company?"
I looked down at the floor and twiddled my thumbs a bit.
"No, I hear she likes the exact music as you. Try to get along with someone, Matt." She gestured for me to go in. I stood in the doorway and looked at him. He looked back at me and observed me from head to toe. Suddenly I had this feeling that I have never experienced before. He was perfect. He was cross legged on his bed tuning a bass guitar, with some hard rock tunes playing in the background. His best feature was his beautiful sapphire blue eyes. I was mesmerised by them. "Have fun, kids!" Miss Kean shut the door. I stood there awkwardly, not knowing what to do or say.
