Chapter 12

(Jane POV)

The courtroom was too silent for me to handle. I thought of cracking a joke to just break the silence, or just trash talk the jury; just to be myself…or the old me. But overthought it all. This is serious, Lisbon would say. Also, I don’t think I'm myself anymore. The old me is gone. Ever since the incident I have been a whole new person. I've always been sure of whom I am, confident and lets face it: charming. But who am I now? A fugitive with a lovely girlfriend who sacrificed so much for me? I guess I've gone mad.

I tried to promise myself that killing Red John would bring me back to life, but I forgot what that was.

Teresa sat next to me, shaking feverishly while holding my hand. I squeezed her hand lightly as if to say, it’ll be okay, you know it. She glanced at me nervously; I knew from the look on her face that she would still be nervous, no changing that. I guess we have that little telepathic connection; well I have most of it.

The jury straightened some papers in front of him and glared down at me, first looking to my lawyer. She had hair clip fastening her brown straightened hair. Her name was Jenny Wilkin. Teresa and I spoke to her outside for a few minutes before she said just to follow her lead. I had told her I could speak to, it was my right. She straight up glared at me and went into the courtroom without Teresa and I. Rude.

Now she is trying to help Lisbon and I. I hope she does a good job. I can tell she is a person that likes respect and will make sure she gets it from everyone, including the judge. So maybe there is more hope than expected.

“Adrian Kenwood, previously named Patrick Jane?” said the jury.

“That’s me!” I say smiling.

Jenny glared at me angrily.

What, he asked me a question?

“Penelope Jill, previously named Teresa Lisbon?”

“Present.” Lisbon said straightening up.

“Now I know I shouldn’t ask, but why did you change your names?” asked the jury. Yeah, he shouldn’t ask…

“Personal choice, your honor. Irrelevant,” said Jenny Wilkin.

“Alright then,” the jury said. “Adrian Kenwood, there are charges against you for the murder of Thomas McAllister (all so known as the serial killer, Red John), breaking out of prison, and etc.”

He paused briefly.

“Sir,” said Jenny. “There is no proof Mr. Kenwood murdered Thomas McAllister. The physical evidence is messy with random prints of unknown associates. Basically, there is no evidence saying Mr. Kenwood really killed Mr. McAllister.”

“But Mr. Kenwood happened to be at the crime scene holding the murder weapon with Mr. McAllister’s own blood on it.” The Jury snapped back.

“With all your respect, Jane- I mean Adrian is very bad with all this evidence. Sometimes he just happens to hold murder weapons…blood or not, your honor.” Teresa said. Wow, I never thought something like that would have ever come out of those pink lips of hers. Teresa Lisbon, my second lawyer.

“Hasn’t Mr. Kenwood been working CBI for about ten years? Shouldn’t he know about not holding murder weapons?”

“Bad habits!” I shrug.

I hear a chuckle behind me. I turn to see, my man, Rigsby sitting next to Grace and Cho. Rigsby changes his smile to a serious face when I see him. I just give him a firm nod and turn back to the jury.
