It was just a regular Wednesday when the confusion began. I just happened to be reading my favorite horror novel and I just got to the part when she was heading into the basement, when I heard my door bell ring. Since I was so deep in thought, I jumped at the loud sound. Annoyed, I got up and walked to the door. Which seemed like a thousand miles away. I unlocked and opened the door expecting to see someone looking back at me,hopefully someone I know. But no one was there, nor was someone walking away or hiding in my rose bushes. I don't know why but something made me look down, and there it was. A letter. Small and almost square shaped. It had one of those red wax circles on it, how fancy. Not even looking back up, I closed the door behind me and walked back to the couch. Before I sat down I just had to know what was in this letter. So I ripped it open and it wasn't just a note, a whole bunch of things. Was this an invention? It looked like one as I pulled out the largest thing in the envelope. It read, Your Invited! I continued despite my confusion.
Miss McCarthy,
You are invited to our very own Masquerade Ball! It will consist of our other friends, so unfortunately you will not know anyone there. I do not recommend you come without a mask, you must stay hidden for your own sake. I also recommend you show up because it's supposed to be very entertaining. We have hired a magician, singer and pianist, and of course a masked murderer. I'm just kidding! I'm just kidding, it's just a cruel joke due to the ball's location, we will be hosting this event at the hilltop of Dead Man's Mountain, where there is Murder Mansion. Don't be scared of the name it is completely harmless, I've gone there many a time at Christmas. Wear something nice and make sure to read my other notes in the secured envelope. Thank you and see you this Saturday at 8 PM sharp.Sincerely, Unknown.
I was still in shock of the third sentence. Maybe I should go, this sounds horrifying. Before I made any final decisions I dumped the rest of the items on my coffee table and sat in my arm chair. I then grabbed the first thing that caught my eye. IDENTIFICATION, it read. Once again, extremely confused, I opened it.
Hello again Miss McCarthy,
I'm glad you're reading this, though this is very important. At the ball, you will not be sharing your real name. So here is your identity for the time being.
TAYLOR ROBERTO, 22, LIVES IN NEW YORK, NEW YORK, LOVES PEANUT BUTTER.
I sat still for a moment, I HATE peanut butter! After a few minutes of just sitting still i went through the other stuff. It was all just menus and more information about the entertainment. But it also read that I couldn't bring anyone else, strange. I was still debating weather to show up or not. Though this was a strange ball and it was sent through an anonymous source, I really should have declined the party in general. But instead I decided to show up, and it was my worst mistake.
