Time had to have stopped. There was no other reason that this would be taking an eternity. At this point I would even rather be in Gaikan's house with Vio. Even that hell would be better than this. I was tired of having to walk. And walk. And walk. We only stopped when I couldn't keep my eyes open anymore and almost fell into one of the walls, and even then she wouldn't let me sleep. If she wasn't going to kill me outright, she was definitely trying to kill me silently, which was much worse.
She had told me her name after the first few hours of silent walking. I hadn't even thought about how I knew nothing about this person, that apparently had to save me no matter what. I guess she hadn't thought it was important enough to be the first thing that she told me, like a normal person. Anyway, it was Skyler. Her name, I mean. It was a weird name for a girl to have, I think. It really did fit her though. The craziness of everything she did, the way that her spirit seemed too free to be able to do anything normally. Great, now I was spitting out stupid spiritual crap. I really had to rest and eat sometimes soon.
BANG
I walked into a ladder. In the middle of the night, I think, underground, in the presence of a girl. A girl that liked telling me how stupid I was, even before I had done something really idiotic, like this. I had shuffled face first into a ladder. I was even facing it, my eyes looking right at it, but I still didn't see it. My forehead was stinging and no doubt had a red mark on it. Hopefully it wasn't going to bruise. That would be even more humiliating. Not like my life was already a joke or anything.
Skyler had burst out laughing instantly, any of the seriousness from earlier gone, like it had never been there in the first place. She pulled herself up the ladder once I stepped away, rubbing my forehead, my face so hot it was probably beet red.
A loud creaking noise from above me caught my attention, especially when the tunnel all around me was filled with natural light flooding in through the opening that the ladder led up to. I squinted up and saw Skyler's face looming above me, a halo of light around her face, her hair falling down onto the last rung of the ladder. She was beaming, happiness shining in her eyes.
