Chapter Thirteen,
What do you call a guy riding a Pegasus with a sword at his side? A guy with a Pegasword by his Pegaside. Hahaha. Okay, I'm the only one who laughed.
But, never mind. Here I am, looking at Red as he lands. "Hi," the guy riding Red said in a gloomy voice as he dismounted from Red.
"He's my boss," I heard Red's telepathic voice inside my head.
"I would like to introduce myself," Mr. Boss guy said as he bowed. "My name is Grimiel Crimson, I know I have a weird name, blame my mother."
He is really pale and skinny. He wears a black shirt, and his eyes are genuinely terrifying, as if he wants to snatch your soul and torture it.
"So," I said, "Why are you here?"
"To help, of course," Grimiel said. "I just want to assist my fellow demigods." He looked at Elliot. Do they know each other? "As I can see, Red's report is accurate. A son of Apollo is with you." The dark circles under his eyes deepened.
I turned my attention to Elliot, "Do you know him?" I asked.
"Nopey dopey," Elliot said.
So, who is this guy? He's suspicious. I don't want to trust him easily, but we're in a challenging situation, and we need all the help we can gather.
"Uhm," I said, "Thank you, but why us?"
He looked me straight in the eye. "Well, I need to prove something to my father, so I decided to help you." His expression darkened.
"Father?" I asked.
"Yes, my father," he said. "Are we going or not?" He climbed back onto Red.
"I think we can trust him," Allicah said, her voice innocent, and I want to believe her.
"Okay," I said, "but I'm going to keep an eye on this guy."
Allicah, Elliot, and I rode on the Pegasus. So, from the west, my eyes quickly zoomed in and saw a triangular-shaped object. It's a pyramid.
"So where to?" Grimiel asked.
"Everyone," I said as our Pegasus ascended. "Follow me." My view returned to normal, but from where the pyramid is located, I could see a glimmer of light.
I led them towards the light. The sun was rising, and our Pegasus were incredibly fast.
***
After about four hours, the pyramid came into view, not just in my view but in all of ours.
The climate changed from a sunny afternoon to a tumultuous one. Thunder echoed, and lightning struck, and by struck, I mean it struck us. There were humanoid figures in the storm, or rather, the humans were made from the dark clouds of the storm.
I was grateful because my Pegasus was adept at dodging the bolts of lightning hurled by the cloud figures.
"Holy cow!" Elliot yelled as he swerved to avoid a bolt of lightning.
"Storm spirits!" Grimiel yelled. "We need to land; we'll be safer down there." He descended.
Allicah fired arrows after arrows while riding her Pegasus. She had exceptional aim. When she heard Grimiel, she immediately followed him down. So I decided to follow them. "Elliot!" I yelled. Elliot understood what I meant, and together we landed.
As soon as we touched down (when Grimiel said 'safer,' well, forget about that), two gigantic sand golems stood tall in front of the pyramid. Think of those guardians seen inside the pharaohs' tombs: muscular sand sculptures, but amplify their size, replace their heads with a large sandstone, give them scary red eyes, and insert truly eerie fangs inside a huge mouth. Voila, you've got yourself a sand golem.
"Now what?" Elliot said as he dismounted his Pegasus.
"Leave this to me!" Grimiel yelled. "Head inside the pyramid." He ordered.
"But," I started, but he interrupted me.
"Just go," he smiled, a creepy smile, as if he was enjoying watching how I might meet my end. (I know, really creepy)
I knew I didn't have the right to abandon him, but I had no choice. We were talking about Horus's life and the peace of the world.
"Allicah! Elliot! Let's go!" I yelled. I clutched my pendant, "khopesh," and sprinted, passing between the legs of the golem, with Allicah and Elliot following behind.
Before the golems could react, I felt a deeply ominous presence, as if entering a haunted house, but this house was incredibly realistic. I tried to look back, but my instincts stopped me.
Up the stairs, there was a large open door at the front of the pyramid, as if it was inviting us to enter. "Are you ready, guys?" I asked.
"Well, we don't have a choice anyway," Elliot said. "Let's go!" And together, the three of us climbed the stairs and entered the pyramid.
As soon as we entered, the door behind us closed. In the first chamber, torches blazed to life. In the center, something lay on the floor, asleep.
It was a lion, but here's the weird part: where the lion's head should be, there was the face of a beautiful lady. Her skin was tanned, and she wore an elegant tiara.
She opened her eyes and yawned, revealing sharp teeth, transforming her from pretty to terrifying.
"Oh? Visitors," she smiled. Behind her, there was a door. "If you wish to pass, you must answer my riddle. If you are correct, I will let you pass; if not, you will be devoured."
Great, I wasn't good at puzzles. "Who is she?" Allicah asked.
"She's one of the most terrifying monsters in Egypt," Elliot explained. "The Sphinx."
So, we were dealing with the real deal, not the chipped-nose architecture.
"With pointed fangs it sits in wait,
With piercing force it doles out fate,
Over bloodless victims proclaiming its might,
Eternally joining in a single bite.
What am I?"Miss Sphinx recited her riddle in her eerie voice, like a witch reciting her incantations.
So, what was the answer to this riddle? As I mentioned earlier, I wasn't good at riddles. I looked at Elliot.
"Don't look at me," Elliot said, "I'm not the one blessed by Thoth."
When I heard Thoth, I immediately remembered Maria. I wished she were here; she could easily answer that riddle.
"I will give you five minutes," the Sphinx said. "Provide the correct answer, or face your doom." She smiled and sat there, waiting.
"Come together," I said.
Allicah and Elliot came closer. "Any ideas?" I asked.
Allicah looked as puzzled as Elliot; this was really difficult. "Let's think about it more deeply," I said. "With pointed fangs, it sits in wait; I think this is an animal."
"With piercing force, it doles out fate; this must be a very powerful animal," Elliot said. "But why would it distribute fate? I wonder."
"Over bloodless victims proclaiming its might," Allicah said. "I think it's high in the food chain?"
"But what if the riddle isn't about an animal?" I said. "Eternally joining in a single bite; so, it joins things, and I don't know an animal that can do that," I explained.
"But there's still a chance it's about an animal," Elliot said.
"Three minutes!" the Sphinx announced.
"Let's gather our answers," I said. "What are your answers, guys?" I asked.
