The Golden Shirt
"Sometimes things are precious on the inside, even when we don't always see them."
I felt bad. Really bad.
I ignored Caleb completely when he seemed to be a nice guy.
He was definitely hurt by my cold actions, or he would most probably hate me.
But hold on!
Why would he hate me? It's not like I killed his puppy! So negative thoughts away!
I released a heavy breath and pressed a palm against my forehead.
My behaviour was annoying me, not that I had any control over it. I spent four days staring onto the same four walls, the same plain ceilings, and I was losing it. I was grateful For Mrs Garvin's food, otherwise I would have starved myself to death.
On the fourth day, I was finally able to learn every single flaw in the room, which was none, of course. So I stupidly stared at the phone background of my mum and I.
I was somehow coming to terms that she was gone. I was beginning to accept the reality of it all.My ears picked on some muffled voices right outside, their footsteps strolling closer and closer. Slowly, I got up from the bed and stalked towards the door, cautious not to make a sound. The door croaked slightly as I pushed it open to a tiny gap, so that I could hear the words that they are bickering on better.
"Alec, she doesn't show a single emotion or smile. The girl will go insane spending so much time in that room!" Mrs Garvin exclaimed angrily and my lips frowned instantly.
I was fine. There was nothing wrong with me.
"And how is that got anything to do with me?" Alec's voice made me lean closer to the door. I released a small breath; it was quite a while since I last heard his voice again.
"You should try to talk to her," The old lady suggested while her footsteps paced across the floor.
"She is not stupid. Maybe just she needs more time to figure herself out." Alec argued back, and Mrs Garvin rushed out an exhausted sigh.
Somehow the way he said 'not stupid' made my stomach flutter with emotions. Well, at least he didn't think I'm dumb. Actually..it seemed more like he was trying to get himself out of the situation!
Mrs Gavin continued to persuade him, "I'm not saying she's stupid, I've seen what grief does to people. Alec... If she doesn't have a supportive shoulder to cry on, you might soon find herself resisting to fight."
Alec remained silent and Mrs Gavin continued, "Her loved ones are gone, she told me her father wants nothing to do with her. There is nothing to keep her, so you might as well help her find something she will be willing to fight for."
I didn't even realize that I was leaning against the cold wall, my forehead burning with anger for the truth that this woman was stating.
I had nothing to fight for.
There was a brief silence before I heard Alec spoke again.
"I'm sure she will be fine," he said roughly without any sort of emotion. I stuck my eye through the gap of the wall and the door, staring directly at the two people who were oblivious to my presence.
Mrs Garvin grasped Alec's arm fiercely flinging him back just as he was about to turn away. The CEO looked at the old lady with a raised eyebrow.
"If you have any respect for her and everything she has been through you will do the right thing," She gloomed, while Alec stared at her with a dull expression on his face.
