Rose was taken to a nearby orphanage but luckily it wasn’t long before a black couple from Gary, Indiana arrived in the search of a baby girl to adopt, the couples names were Joseph and Katherine Jackson. ‘Hello, my wife and I would like to adopt a baby girl’ Joseph explained to the receptionist, ‘yes sir, in fact we’ve recently had a nine month old baby girl brought in’ the receptionist answered looking at her computer screen.
‘Could we see her please?’ Katherine asked hopefully, ‘yes if you’d like to follow me’ the woman said leading the couple into another room, they sat down while the woman went to collect baby Rose. Moments later she returned carrying the baby, she handed the little girl over to Katherine and explained ‘this little one is names Rose Olivia Dixon.’ Katherine held her in her arms for a while staring at her sleeping face ‘oh Joseph she’s perfect’ Katherine whispered to her husband. ‘What is her background?’ Joseph asked curiously, ‘well from what we’ve been told her family were killed in a house fire around a month ago but the rest of her family aren’t on any of our records so we don’t know that much about her’ the receptionist answered sadly looking at Rose. Joseph then announced ‘she’s perfect for us, we’d like to adopt her’ ‘ok then I’ll get the paperwork ready’ the receptionist smiled before standing up.
Rose was taken back to the nursery while Katherine, Joseph and the receptionist sat down to sign the adoption papers. When they were complete Katherine and Joseph left the building with their beautiful new little girl, Joseph drove them all home and the minute they arrived, Katherine ran inside carrying the child. She sat down in the living room and shouted her other children to come and meet the new arrival. Rose was only one out of nine other kids in the Jackson household, there were six boys (Jermaine, Jackie, Tito, Randy, Marlon and Michael) and three girls (LaToya, Janet and Maureen but everyone called her Rebbie) but Rose wasn’t the only baby in the house for Joseph and Katherine had a ten month old baby boy who was called Michael. The older children were told not to tell the younger children that Rose was adopted and Katherine warned ‘Rose must never know’ the children agreed to never tell her. Katherine and Joseph decided to rename Rose, they chose the name Sharice but her birth certificate was never changed instead another one was made that said Katherine and Joseph were her birth parents.
