I don't like people.
I have to pretend I do though, or else people worry. I'm not saying I'm popular, I'm just me, but I do have a rep to keep. I'm 13 years old, and I often feel to short. I'm only 4'10. But, I'm a star basketball player, captain of the soccer team and co-captain of the volleyball team. I'm also in track. I'm apparently the funny little athletic girl who's calm and collected and loves everything, but my life's a mess.
I don't have a dad or a mom, so I live with my grandmother. I was in a car crash two years ago, and hit my head, so I have no recollection of before I was 11 years old. My grandma tells me wonderful stories about my parents, but she is very strict. She hardly lets me have any friends over, making it hard for me to have super close friends. But I'm getting there.
You see, recently a new girl my age came to my school, Grand River. Her name is Hazel. She's 13, like me, but she has an aura that makes it seem like she's older. The thing is, almost everyone in this school has been here since Kindergarten. Wesley is a small town and only has one Catholic school that goes from K to 8. I'm in 8th grade, and the whole time I've been here there has never been a new kid in my grade. So, it was pretty weird when Hazel came. I'm not sure what happened, but me and her immediately clicked and became friends.
Hazel was the first friend aloud over to my house, like EVER. It was really cool, she was so fascinated by everything. Even by my microwave, it was like she'd never seen one before. I'm not sure why this was the first time I was aloud a friend over to my house, but as soon as I said the name Hazel Levesque my grandmother was ecstatic. When she had to leave, I was very upset, because that was the most fun I'd had in ages.
"Bye Hazel! See you tomorrow?"
"Of course!" she smiled at me and walked out the door. I'm not sure who she lives with, I've never heard her talk about any parents or relatives. She's kind of a mystery, but she's still the nicest person I've ever met. As she walked away, I noticed a small gem in the doorway. I quickly slipped it into my pocket before my grandma noticed. I would return it to Hazel tomorrow.
The next day was amazing. It was like the diamond was good luck or something, because suddenly everything was going my way. I got an A in three tests, better than my usual B. I also scored 3 goals in soccer, and became team captain of the basketball team. It was amazing. I was going to give the diamond back to Hazel, but something stopped me. I wondered how long this good luck could last.
A week later, my luck still hasn't faded. I decided it was time to give the diamond back to Hazel. I felt so bad for keeping it, but I would explain everything.
"Hey Hazel," I said, walking up to her.
"Hey Cassie!" she replied, hugging me.
"What class do you have next?" I asked, making conversation before I told her.
"French," she responded, smiling.
"Ooo!" I squealed, french is my favourite.
"J'aime le français! Mais mon classe préféré apré anglais c'est la matimatique." I said, giggling.
"Ooooo. Trés fantastique!" We both burst out laughing, Hazel had the funniest French accent. I suddenly remembered what I needed to tell her, and reached my hand into my pocket.
"Hey Hazel, I forgot to tell you that—" I was cut off by my phone ringing. I answered it.
"Hello?" I asked.
"Is this Cassie Angel, Marissa Carstair's granddaughter?"
"Er...yes? Who is this?"
"This is Officer Amelia White from the downtown police station. I am sorry to inform you but there was a fire started by an unknown cause. Your grandmother was caught in the middle of it and couldn't escape. I'm sorry but...she didn't make it."
Those words caused my whole world to go dark. I couldn't think. Shards of glass seemed to break inside me.
"No," I whispered. Those words...a rush of memories came back with them. I dropped my phone. I slammed it down to the ground, shattering the screen, but I didn't care. This had to be some sort of sick joke.
"Cassie..." Hazel lightly put a hand on my arm sympathetically. She had obviously heard the whole phone call. I jerked away.
"I believe this is yours," I said, slamming the diamond to the ground before running off. With a quick glance over my shoulder I saw Hazel go pale and put her hands over her mouth in shock, followed by footsteps behind me.
"Cassie! Listen to me! Please!" I heard Hazel's voice yelling after me, but I needed to be alone. She wouldn't let up though, and I knew she wouldn't give up until she caught up to me. I finally collapsed against a tree, my head between my knees, sobbing hard.
"Cassie," Hazel said, "We need to talk."
