Chapter 1- Shay Gets A Shiny, Old, Mirror
"Shadow!" whispered my mom loudly. She was trying to shake me awake. I looked at her, confused.
"What?" I mumbled. "What time is it?" I asked my mom, looking outside. It was pitch black. The moon was full and shining brightly. I groaned loudly. I looked at my alarm clock beside my bed. It said it was one twenty four in the morning.
My mom had tears running down her face. Her cheeks were bright red. "This is important Shadow, your-" she started to say but I cut her off.
"Can't this wait until I am awake?" I snapped at her, irritated. Why did she have to get me up so early?
"No. It can't, I was going to wait until morning, but I know how much you loved her," said mom. More tears ran down her face. She looked like she was holding back some sobs. What does she mean by 'but I know how much you loved her'?
Feeling guilty I asked, "What is it?"
"Grandma had a heart attack. Your Aunt Beatrice was staying over at her house. She went to the hospital however she didn't make it. I'm so sorry, Shadow," said my mom.
It took a couple of seconds to comprehend what my mom just said. My grandma is dead? That can't be possible. I just visited her a couple of days ago. She was perfectly fine. She can't just be gone, right? Is my mom playing a joke on me? She can't be serious. But looking at my mom's face gave me an answer. My grandma is actually gone. I was very close to my grandma. She was a very important person in my life. Hot tears started to roll down my face as I thought of some sweet memories of her. My mom started to sobbing and we both hugged each other.
"I'll let you get back to sleep. I just wanted you to know because I need to get to the hospital to take care of some things. I love you," she said as she tucked me back in. I cried myself back to sleep.
Thoughts and more thoughts entered my mind the next day. What were my last words to my grandma? What were her last words to me? Was she hurting bad before she left? Where is her body now? There was also some points were I convinced myself she wasn't gone and she was coming over for tea at my house at noon. I found myself making a cup of tea and staring at the door every once in a while to see if she is here yet. I knew in the back of my mind that she isn't coming ever again.
I can't stand this screaming silence around me anymore. I am home alone because my mom is visiting her sister, my Aunt Beatrice. I can't stand to face them when I'm like this. My thoughts will overcome me and I'm afraid I will drown in them. I need to talk with someone. I immediately think of my best friend Alex. I grab my cell phone and call his number without hesitation.
Alex picked up on the second ring. "Hello?" he answered.
"Hey," I said weakly.
"Wow, it sounds like you didn't get a lot of sleep," he said.
"Well... I didn't," I said.
"Why not?" he asked me.
I was hesitant to answer as saying it out loud to someone made even more real. I paused for a couple of seconds, not daring to say it. "Well my mom woke me up at like one in the morning to tell me something," I just told him.
"Why?" he asked confused.
"Well, erm, my grandma died," I said with a soft whisper. Uh oh. I feel the sadness building up in my chest. The tears are coming.
"What? Did you just say your dog died? You don't even have a dog."
"What? No! I said my grandma died," I said with a sob. Tears then started to roll down my face.
