Vanessa laid on the couch in the family room, waiting for her brother and his wife to arrive back at their apartment. She felt awful about what she had said to the twins, but she knew that they wouldn't forgive her. The front door opened and she heard two soft giggles enter into her ear. She sat upright on the couch and stretched out her arms, letting a brief yawn out.

"Hey Ness," Kevin said to her, she knew they had been drinking...she could literally smell it on them. "Th-Thanks for watching the kids, for us. We really appreciate it..."

Tiffany nodded and let out a small laugh, "I-I guess I better get to bed be-before I pass out...God," She let out another laugh, "I am so going to be hungover tomorrow."

She stumbled off into the hallway, nearly running into the wall in the process. Vanessa noticed that one of her heels was missing now...no doubt in the backseat of Kevin's car or some other random place.

Vanessa looked Kevin up and down and he gave her a dopey smile. "God, Ness," He grasped onto her shoulders and began to laugh under his breath. "Th-That was the best night of my existence..."

"Kevin, you are really drunk," She began to loosen up his grasp on her. "How much did you drink?"

"Like one beer...no wait," He placed a finger on his lip and looked around like he was contemplating something. "It was more like...four...maybe."

Vanessa rolled her eyes and hit Kevin's arm, "How are you going to go to work tomorrow? You're practically delusional, right now."

"Aw, it'll wear off b-by tomorrow, Nessie, dontcha worry about it," He threw an imaginary baseball just past Vanessa's shoulder and then reached in his back pocket. Pulling out his wallet, he began to count out a few twenty dollars. "Thanks again..." He chuckled slightly, "We really appreciate it."

She took the money and put it in her front pocket and looked him with amused eyes. She nodded her head, "Welp, I better get going."

"Right, right," Kevin rubbed his eyes and then smiled. He pulled her into a breath-taking hug and she began to smell the alcohol on his breath more and more. "God, Ness...did you shrink or something...you're like so short..."

Vanessa pushed off of him and patted him on the shoulder. "You have a good night, Kev."

Vanessa walked the remaining blocks back to her apartment in complete silence.

How could she be so heartless? How could she be so...mean?

She had been there those two little girls were born. She had felt that absolute sense of love and happiness on that day. Because she knew those two little girls were miracles.

But now, she had pretty much told them: "Don't have a childhood, don't have happiness in your life, don't imagine a sweet and magical world."

She sighed and looked down at her leather boots, listening to the small clicks that the heels made as they hit the pavement. As she continued to walk...she had an odd feeling that she wasn't alone. It was like someone was watching her from a distance. She turned around and saw nothing but an empty crosswalk with the signal blinking a red hand. She gazed cautiously at it one more time and continued to walk.

Opening up the door to her apartment, Vanessa threw her keys on the round table by the front door. She walked into her living room and threw herself down onto the worn-out, canvas couch. She glanced at the clock on the television, it was already past midnight.

Ugggh, I have work, I forgot, she thought to herself. Groaning, Vanessa pushed her face into the couch pillow with a small, red wine stain still remaining on it.

She remembered when that splash of red had gotten onto the tan canvas pillow.

Nate.

Was that the reason why she was so miserable to people? Especially children? Because they still had lives to live? The still could hope...Dream?

She sighed and felt a tear well up in her right eye. She felt like that horrible green lady in The Wizard of Oz.

She sat upright and wiped up the tear. There's nothing that I can do about it now, She thought to herself.

Standing up from the couch, she let out a yawn and began towards her bedroom, prepared for a restless sleep.

"She's a peculiar one isn't she, sir?" A voice somewhere far off in the night.

"Yes...yes, she very much is...and I think she needs a bit of...help with this little problem, don't you agree?"

"B-But, sir? Her? There are so many people in this land...shouldn't we keep looking for someone who is worse then her?"

"No...she is the one..." The quiet and yet powerful voice whispered to his companion.
