Vanessa slowly opened her eyes to look into the sunlight, groaning slightly as she did so. What time was it anyways? She glanced at her alarm clock and instantly shot out of bed. It was 9:45. She had to be at work at 8:00.

Kicking off the covers, she quickly scurried over to her closet. She pulled out the first thing she laid her hands on as she pulled on a random shirt and tousers. She knew she didn't have time to eat breakfast or worry about fixing her hair. She brushed her hair up into a high ponytail and scampered over to her bathroom, brushing her teeth as fast she possibly could.

Screw makeup, Vanessa thought to herself and she placed her toothbrush back in its holster. She sprinted out of her bathroom, grabbed her satchel off the hook on the wall, and ran to her front door. Her flip flops slid her down the stairs and she ran out the entrance to the building.

The two blocks to The Kindled Heart felt like it was a million mile journey as Vanessa jogged down the busy side walk.

People shot her dirty looks as she bumped into them or stepped on the back of their heels. She rounded the corner and quickly scampered up the steps to the publishing house. Running through the almost bare lobby, she pushed the elevator call button.

As she  reached my level, she stepped into a surprisingly empty office space. Where was everyone? A custodian began to walk past her as she stepped into the bare area.

"Um, excuse me, sir?"

He turned around, rubbing a hand over his bald head. "Yes, ma'am?"

"Do you know where everyone is?" Vanessa asked clueless.

"Oh yes, apparently your boss had decided to have a day off today for everyone. She had some conference in Brooklyn, I think," he replied, glancing down out her unmatched outfit.

Vanessa looked down at the floor suddenly, her hands forming fists. "Thanks for letting me know."

"No problem, maam," he began to wheel away his cleaning cart.

Vanessa felt like screaming. Why hadn't anyone told her that she didn't have to come today? She pulled out her cell phone and saw a new message that she had forgotten to read the night before.

From: Sandy

Hey, guess what? NO WORK TOMORROW! Have a good day off!

She frowned at the screen and shoved the device back into her satchel.

Well, that's just great, she thought.

Vanessa arrived back to her bare apartment after a rather leisurely walk back.

I swear, I have the worst luck in the world, she thought to herself.

She threw herself down on the couch and flipped on the TV. She flipped through the channels and came to the conclusion that there is nothing good to watch at 10 o'clock in the morning on a Wednesday. She flipped the TV off and threw down the remote.

What was there to do now? Hm, maybe...yep, she had nothing.

She leaned back into the embroidered pillow and closed her eyes. Eh, sleeping was okay for now, she supposed. She dozed off here and there, occasionally jerking awake because of her quiet snores.

There was suddenly a rapid knock at the door and she quickly rose from her slumber. She rubbed her eyes as she glanced at the clock, it was about noon.

She stood up from her seat and walked back into the kitchen area. She walked to the front door and opened it up. No one was on the other side, so she assumed she was just hearing things. She stepped out slightly to look around for anyone, but then felt something slide under her foot. She lifted up my bare foot to see an envelope resting on the ground.

"What's this?" she whispered under her breath as she picked it up from the floor.

It was addressed in almost perfect cursive with golden pen:

Ms. Vanessa Marks

2313 Lowell Road, Apt 2B

New York, NY

Yeah, that was her address, but who in the world sent this to her? She glanced to the return address:

The Make Believers

Once Upon a Time Co.

527 Wish Upon a Star Ave.

Forestville, Fairy Tale Land

Okay, so now someone was playing a joke on me, right? she rolled her eyes as she pulled out the folded letter, dumping the envelope on the kitchen floor.

Dear Ms. Vanessa Marks,

We hereby invite you to come visit us at the Once Upon a Time Company in Fairy Tale Land. It will be an all expense paid getaway exclusively with your own cottage in the beautiful-

She didn't even bother to read rest of this horrendously written lie. She couldn't believe that someone would try pull a joke like this on her.

She crumpled the letter up into a ball and threw into the trash basket next to her.

The nerve of some people, Vanessa thought to herself.

"Sh-She didn't read it all, sir," the shy elf muttered to his boss.

"She doesn't take us seriously?" The man dressed in an all white suit asked his small worker.

"Um, I don't suppose she does, sir, no," he replied, shakily. His eyes avoided meeting the man's beautiful, gleaming sapphire eyes. The elf already felt short most of the time, but especially now in front of the man's tall, lean figure.

"Well fine, you know what you need to do then," The man commented as crossed his arms. "We will make her believe, I mean that's what we do here, isn't it?"

"Um, y-yes, sir," his breaths becoming a little more wheezy.

"I want her here by tomorrow," The man turned on his cream dress shoes heels, facing away from the elf and towards the large window in the office. "I'll talk to her personally in fact."

"Al-Alrighty then, sir," the short-being bowed his head at the greater power. "I will get right on it, your Fairyness."

The man smirked to himself at the sound of his title. "Hop to it," he spoke behind his back.

The elf began to scurry out of the office, his feet making a slight 'pitter patter' as he left.

The man began to sense her in his mind. There were many like her, yes, but her story was more unique than many others. She wanted to believe deep down, that he knew to be very true.

"Oh, Vanessa Marks," the man shook his head in worry. "What will we do with you?"
