The strange friend

The rest of the day seemed to drag although I do not know the reason why. It could have been because I wanted the day to end or because I was not with any of my friends. I was glad when school ended and I waited at the top of the street. Serena took ages to arrive at our meeting point so while I waited I messaged my foster mother.

Hey. Probably not gonna come home tonight. Going out finding an old friend with sis who I found. Love you lots. Thanks for everything.

I really did care for them both, but I needed answers and those answers are going to have to come from a dead man walking. I hated it but I knew it was a must.

"So, we ready? It's a good thing we don't really need to eat although the food up here is so good." Serena said creeping up behind me.

I thumbed the purple charm on my bracelet. I was fortunate to have gifts like this because it makes what I was about to do easier. Without it, I did not think that I could have found Justin.

"The blackened forest near here. It's the only place I can think of. If the kingdom is below this place then he should be close. I hope I'm right"

"Gesh you're starting to sound like me." Serena laughed removing her teleportation charm.

"Focus..." I muttered thinking about the blackened forest.

The teleportation from one place to another is actually quite soothing once you get used to it.

The blackened forest is a forest that was badly damaged. What I heard from the locals was that some people were camping in the forest but the fire went wild which, in turn, caused a forest fire. Nobody knew how it started but the whole family, uncludong a seven year old were all killed. It was a tragedy for the wildlife but the perfect place where a member of the resurrected would stay.

A member of the resurrected is anyone who died and somehow came back to life. I do not fully understand how it works. Nobody does which is one of the reasons we are being hunted as there is a high probability of a person from beneath the crust, Bonzar as we call it, has a higher chance of becoming a member of the resurrected than a human from the crust.

We decided that it would be best if we stayed together, considering the dangers. I enjoyed her company because I knew that without her I would have been absolutely terrified.

"He is in here." Serena stated

"You can tell?" I asked.

"Yeah. He's not far either."

I nodded trusting her judgement. I didn't like trusting her but in this situation I had no choice. As we continued walking I began to think that I was having an effect on her when...

"Merla and Serena Clayton. Glad the two of you could make it." A familiar voice said from I didn't know where "I was beginning to worry you wouldn't show."

I sighed. "Justin stop being creepy. You know why we're here so just tell us! I do want some sleep you know."

"You've really adjusted to the surface and it's language. However I don't want you to be hurt so I will not be answering your question. However I will tell you this. You were brought to this place to gain and find power."

"The hell you talking about." Serena demanded a better explanation.

"I can not tell you everything but what I can say is that those gems on your bracelet are not the only ones. They are scattered. You're fortunate that I have two with me" Justin pulled out a white and a black one. "You may recognise these ones."

"The hope and despair gems!" I was confused "But why those? I thought..."

"You will still have each other but each of you have to find the balance between hope and despair. So Merla you take the black one and Serena takes the white one." Justin seemed calm.

"But... what about..."

"I'll be hiding with you. I am in as much danger as you are, maybe a little less but still. So one of you have to take me to your accommodation." Jason was creeping me out.

"I will" Serena sighed "my fosters are out for six weeks so you have that time in my place. After six weeks you're on your own."

He nodded as Serena held her teleportation charm. I grasped mine.

"Oh I almost forgot. Don't trust everyone in that school of yours."

With that Serena and Justin disappeared. I thought for a moment about what Justin had just said. I could not understand what it meant so I just pushed it to the side and went home.

I arrived at the front doorstep. I knew what my fosters would do once I stepped inside. I loved every part of them, the fact that they treated me like I was their own child and not a princess from some far away land really soothes me about all of the troubles from the outside world.

"Oh sweetheart we were so worried. I thought you had been hurt or worse... no its ok now. You're safe." My foster mum, Kayleigh, hugged me.

"You should phone us next time so that we could know that you're alright." That was my foster dad Mark.

"I will do," I laughed "although I don't know why you got so worried. I can handle myself remember?" I said showing them the bracelet.

"Yes we know but," Kayleigh added "what you said about your sister is that she caused you to end up in this mess."

"Yeah," I smiled "but she is my only real family my little sister. No offence. Besides... she's changed."

"Changed how?" Mark asked before saying "Nevermind that now, you should get some rest."

I nodded and headed up to room and grabbed an object that they call a phone. There was an app on there called Facebook and I had five friend requests. They were from: Carmella, Kevin, Nick, Justin and Serena. I accepted all of them and Justin messaged me.

Remember. Don't trust anyone in that school apart from me and Serena.
