Jaylynn knew the minute that Luben and her arrived back to Cannon’s house something wasn’t right.

The fact that Cannon just about tore the front door off its hinges as he stormed in yelling her name like a mad man only solidified the hunch.  Quicker than she could blink, Cannon was in front of her and hauling her into his arms. She only managed a choked gasp as he squeezed the life out of her.

“Are you okay? You’re not hurt are you?” Cannon asked frantically, pulling away from her just enough to scan her body to check that she was indeed, unharmed.

Jaylynn blinked up at him. “Uh..yes?” She asked more than answered. Cannon’s hazel eyes bore into hers. “Jaylynn, it’s time to answer some questions.” Cannon said firmly, leaving no room for argument.

Jaylynn sighed, nodding her head wearily. She figured it was only a matter of time before he would start to demand answers, especially after today. But she didn’t want to answer his questions. His questions would only unleash the darkness that she tried so hard to keep tightly bound.  She was afraid that he wouldn’t want her anymore, and she didn’t want to lose him.

Before she knew it she was sitting on the couch with Cannon sitting on the chair directly opposite from her. He stared at her expectantly, but patiently waiting for her to speak. Jaylynn heaved in a breath, before letting it out in a long tired sigh. She avoided looking at him, afraid to lose her nerve. But if she was honest with herself- which she wasn’t- she didn’t want to see his reaction to what she was about to tell him.

“I don’t remember much about my early childhood,” Jaylyan began, her voice whisper soft. “From what I’m told, my parents died in a car accident when I was one.  I was in foster care until I was about three.” Jaylynn stopped, glancing up at Cannon briefly. He gave her a soft smile, encouraging her to go on. But his eyes were dark and Jaylynn noticed that his hands were trembling.

She looked down at her hands, wringing them together nervously. “Until they came and adopted me.”  If Cannon wasn’t a werewolf, he wouldn’t have been able to hear that soft whisper. He learned forward, resting his elbows on his knees listening to her with rapt attention and ignoring the fast tempo of his heart.

“At first they were the perfect parents, even taking me on trips to the park and tucking me into bed.” Jaylynn smiled mockingly.

“They stopped the pretense once the social services were done with  their checkups. That’s when they changed, when they become monsters” Jaylynn closed her eyes against the moisture that appeared in them, her breath hitching as the memories rushed back. “They beat me, especially when they were on drugs. I learned very early not to cry or else the punishment would get worse.”

Cannon growled lowly, clenching his fist tightly his muscles bunching with the effort to stop his trembling. His wolf was furious, and so was he. Talking about this was just as hard for her as it was for him to listen to. But he couldn’t tell her to stop; they needed to know what they were up against.
