Chapter 3
Dane didn't sleep that night. She lay in bed for hours until morning light creeped through her window. She could hear her dads downstairs going through the kitchen cabinets making breakfast, and after a while the smell of blueberries animated her- they pushed her to wake up and get in the shower.
She washed quickly, wandered into her room and threw on a pair of well-worn blue jeans and a blue pullover- her usual morning attire. She threw her hair into a messy bin and made her way down the steps and into the dining room. Everything was well. Her Pa was sipping coffee ad reading the paper while her Da served him a large helping of eggs, ham, sausage, and bacon. As always, everything looked amazing.
She almost didn't notice her brother emerging from the kitchen with a platter of muffins in his hands.
Dane nearly screamed. "Dig?"
He grinned. "Hey, sis." He sat down and helped himself to over-easy eggs, hashbrowns, and every breakfast meat available.
"When did you get here?" She wondered.
"About an hour ago, sweetheart." Her Da answered. "It was early, we didn't want to bother you."
"Oh." She sat down warily and poured herself a large glass of orange juice. "So, um...what are you...doing here...um...Dig?" She asked awkwardly.
"I've come home. I've gotten my act together." His smile widened. "They're letting me come home."
Both of her fathers beamed. "We're glad you're well again, Dig." Her Da whacked him on the back. "No more drugs, boy."
Dig nodded enthusiastically. "No more. I'm glad to be home. I'm glad you-" His voice broke and he took a deep breath to steady himself. He swallowed loudly. "I'm glad you let me come home."
Her Pa reached over and placed his hand on Dig's. "We're glad you came home."
Dane's jaw dropped lower and lower as this scene unfolded in front of her. She was so confused. There was something weird about the whole thing. Why did they accept him so quickly? She almost demanded to know...but Dig's smile was so wide and so genuine that she just couldn't do it. Instead, she placed two slices of ham, a large serving of hashbrowns, and an over easy egg on her plate. She proceeded to smother everything in steak sauce.
"Ew." Digory said once he noticed her breakfast habit.
"Hey, now," She began around a giant bite of food, "You're in no position to judge my habits."
He laughed, nodded, and continued to stuff his face.
"So, um...not to ruin the reunion...but since he's gonna be living with us again where's he gonna go when you leave for business in two weeks?" Dane wondered, the crease in her forehead deepening.
"He's going to stay here; so are you." Her Pa responded.
Dane's jaw dropped. Living with her brother would mean seeing Dig's friends on at least a daily basis. "Oh." She knew better than to say something she really didn't want to get in trouble for. She simply continued to eat her breakfast in silence.
"Dig, what is it you do now, sweetheart?" Their Pa wondered.
Dig's mouth was stuffed full of food so he kind of grunted out his answer.
Their Da cocked an eyebrow at him. "You should probably chew first."
Dig swallowed hard and gave him a crooked smile. "I'm a bodyguard. And I help employ others for my bosses."
