In this book, there are a lot of slang form the 1860's. And here will be the meaning for them all.
This story also takes place in 1869 France, in which all homosexual acts between two men (although not women) have been banned. In 1889 this act was lifted, though this story takes place before then.

PARLOR SOLDIER - a derisive slang term intended to suggest that the soldier to whom the term referred was no true soldier, but an imitation, dressed more for show than for practical use. There was also the suggestion that such a one was also effeminate.
