Chapter 15

The next several days were awkward for me. I did my absolute best to be away from Trent as much as possible. Difficult when he knew where I worked and where I lived. I was monitoring the results on the computer my leg bouncing. I wasn't able to sit still or concentrate. This wasn't normal for me. I sighed and got up. Distraction wasn't something I handled well. I was usually so laser focused. I left my office and went down to the main level of the aquarium. I was rubbing my forehead and heading to the café when I heard someone call my name. I turned and sighed. Trent, who else.

"Hey, Mikaela," he gave me a sheepish grin. "I know you've been working hard, so I thought I'd bring you something to eat."

"You really didn't have to,"

"I know," Trent smiled. "I wanted to. Come on," Trent grabbed my hand and dragged me back up to my office.

"Why not just eat in the café? It was three feet away."

"Come on, that'd be bad for business. You don't go to a restaurant and bring your own food, do you? Sends the wrong message, besides, I like watching you work."

"I'm not hungry," I lied.

"When was the last time you ate something?"

I frowned, thinking back.

"I know you didn't have any breakfast before you left this morning, and somehow I doubt you grabbed something on the way. I'd also wager that you worked through lunch." Trent chided. How the hell did he know that? "So, last night?"

I rolled my eyes. "Don't look so smug about it."

"Mikaela, you've got to eat. Put an alert on your phone or something." Trent mothered. "I brought Chinese."

"I hate Chinese."

"No, I know for a fact that you like three Chinese dishes, and I have them all. General Tao's Kung Pow Chicken, sweet and sour chicken, and shrimp fried rice."

I narrowed my eyes at him. "Quit spying on me!" I snapped.

Trent's response was a cheeky grin. "You don't have to tell me everything, but I will find out." Trent handed me a fortune cookie. "What's your fortune say?" He asked as he dug one out for himself and cracked it open.

"Fortune cookies are stupid,"

"Aww, they're fun." Trent pouted and read him. "Mine says: Something you lost will soon turn up. Ooooh, spooky." Trent laughed.

"I rest my case."

"Go on, it's all in good fun,"

I rolled my eyes but cracked mine open. Love is for the Lucky and the Brave. Yup fortune cookies were stupid.

"Well?"

"Well what?"

"Well, what does it say?"

"Something stupid."

Trent rolled his eyes and snatched it out of my hands. "It's not too off."

"How so?"

"Love is definitely for the brave."

"Love is for the daft."

"Mikaela, how old are you?"

"Twenty-six."

"How can you be so cold?"

I looked up at him and it felt like I'd been slapped across the face. I wasn't cold! Was I? Well, maybe I was, but that didn't mean he had to go and call me out about it. "I'm not hungry and I have a lot of work to do. I'll just see you when I get home."
