The Dark Days

SUMMER'S POV

I embraced my sweet, little innocent friend, Ella, "We'll be back soon." I told her before looking over to Ace, "Take care of her," I mouth, and he simply nods in return.

"I don't want him to hurt you." Her small voice answers as she plants her chin on my shoulder. I have to squat down to match her height.

"Dakota?" I manage a weak laugh, "He wouldn't stand a chance against me." My laughter turns into a frown as I realize the lie that was hiding in that statement, but it luckily brought a smile to her face.

She looks up at me with big, sad brown eyes, "I know. Just- be careful, okay?"

"I will." I ruffled her golden hair before rising, and facing Conner. "Ready?" I ask him, but feel more as if I am asking myself.

"Sure." He responds hesitantly, "We meet them in ten minutes."

"Let's head out." I found myself turning the cold knob, opening the creaking door, "Bye Ace, bye Ella." I firmly close the piece of wood behind us.

"Why are you so nervous?" Conner asks as we entered the daylight. It's a chilly morning, but not as cold as the past few have been.

I frown, "Nervous? Me? No."

"You're fidgeting with that ring like you always do when you are." He points out, his eyebrow in an arch.

"Oh." I looked down at the jewelry that sat snugly on my finger. I hadn't even realized that I'd been messing with it, "I just don't know what to expect."

Ahead of us, the two boys, Dakota and Emeren's son, stood at a wooden table. On top of it, lay several guns. I spot a couple handguns as well as shotguns, but I couldn't see it all. Dakota looks up, seeing us, and my blood instantly begins to boil. I feel my hands slowly forming two fists.

"Hey!" Conner jerks me back around to face him, "Summer, this is serious. Don't say anything dumb. I don't mean to offend you, but I don't want you to die."

"I won't, I won't." I raised my hands high in defense.

We continue, "Good." He crosses his arms.

"Except for the fact that he's a big-"

He shoves me to the side, to silence me, nearly knocking me onto the ground.

"Kidding, kidding." I rubbed my now sore shoulder.

We approached them, and at first no one said anything. Finally the blonde boy spoke, "I'm Will Embers."

Conner and I look at each other blankly, then back at him.

"What are your names?" He asks us cautiously, then looks at Dakota to see if he had said something wrong.

"What are your names?" Dakota barks to make us speak, "Answer him."

"Conner and Summer." Conner answers for the both of us, which I was thankful for.

"Well, it's good to meet you both." He slung the strap holding a gun around his shoulders. "We should get going."

My hand hovers over the largest weapon on the table, but I quickly changed my mind, knowing that Dakota was about to make a comment. "Where are we going?" I stammer.

"No questions. Just follow us." The red head demands.

We walk a couple feet behind them, and you don't know how much self-control it takes for me not to fire the weapon when I had been given the perfect chance.
