Flying Flames

LYDIA'S POV

The storm outside only picks up, and I'm assuming the flames have as well. I sit between Graham and Ender, counting to sixty too many times that I've lost track of the total.

A soft voice mutters something, but I can't quite pick up what they're saying. Then, a small bit of light spreads around the room due to a match.

"I forgot I had this," Tara says, glancing around the room to make sure we are all here.

I lay my head down on Graham's shoulder, and finally realize how cold I actually am. The underground area is small, and completely empty besides us, of course.

"I have to go back." Amélie says sharply, "My people..."

Tara shakes her head, "You're right," they won't survive if we don't go." Her dark hair is braided into two plaits. She has a light brown jacket to keep herself warm.

I glance down at my leg, happily noticing that it is healing faster than I'd ever think. I'm very much capable of walking, even running, now. Whatever she did to heal me, really worked.

"No," Ender, whom is usually quite silent for the most part, speaks, "it's too dangerous. The fire will get to you before you can get back."

"We have to try." Tara snaps, and Amélie nods.

"What kind of a leader would I be," the red-head says, "if I don't try my best to save those who follow me?"

"Then a group of us will go." Piper states, rubbing her temples as she thinks.

"The others will stay here," Hayes adds, "unless the others don't return."

"Fine." Amèlie agrees after a while, "We have to travel fast."

"I'll go." I say, and Graham shoots me a confused look. "It'll be fine." I tell him, rising with no problem.

"Me too," Ender nods, standing up as well.

"You three, stay here." Tara tells the others, "Only leave when the fire has stopped."

Going back into the outdoors involved the slam of wind onto us. I nearly fell over once I reached the surface. Ender had to help me get my balance back, but Amélie and Tara had already taken off. They move different than we do. They have good sense of direction and no problem dashing around without stumbling, unlike me.

The fire is a good bit from us, but I still feel the heat on my face. It burns, and I wish it felt like winter again. I race after them, Ender in front of me. We run by the surrounding trees and everything is blurry as I follow. The flames are behind us, but they are catching up, and who knows if they've already gone through the Hunter's Base.

Amélie screams something, and I only realize what she had yelled after a tree falls in front of us. With no hesitation, she changes the path, and continues on in more of a hurry this time.

A minute later, the structure of her base appears before us. Except, it has collapsed. The wood is sprawled out everywhere, completely destroyed. I watch in horror as the Hunters frantically running around, looking for survivors. Ender joins in, and I have to shake my head from thought to get myself to help.

That's when I start to see bodies. Third-degree burns cover the poor victims of the fire. I look over my shoulder, the red and orange heat no where in sight.

"I'm so sorry." I whisper to them, but even if they were alive, they wouldn't be able to hear over the storm.

I run off, searching for any sign of life.
