The bell rang as  Maya,Riley and I were at our lockers Riley was texting Lucas on her phone "talk to him" Maya ordered "why? We have a great text relationship" Riley told us "you know what's better than a text relationship?" I asked "what?" Riley asked "talk to him" I ordered I heard a whooshing sound come from Riley's phone "he's right over there" Maya pointed to the bench where Lucas was sitting "no! Too complicated over there lots of things can go wrong over there the only thing that can go wrong over here is if I go over there" she told us I held my hands out and she handed me her textbooks and walked over to Lucas she stood behind the bench and mouthed words then she.......smelled him she walked back over to us "you smelled him" Maya said blankly "yup" "you smelled him that's what you did!" I told her as I handed her back her textbooks "I walk through life the way I walk through life" she said "can we please talk about this?" Maya asked her Riley walked into the history classroom I heard my cellphone ding in my pocket I took it out Maya took her cellphone out as well "nope!" We said in unison as we followed Riley into the classroom
Time skip............
"You guys don't connect with each other,it's like you can't exist without this" Mr Matthews said holding up a cellphone "you use emoticons rather than emotions,you're a unfeeling generation of zombies" Maya and I leaned into Riley and started to mimic zombies "stop eating the other two!" Matthews ordered I laughed the classroom door opened "you're late Miss Myzell" Matthews told her "my goldfish died" Myzell told him as she cried "you see? Miss Myzell has clearly suffered a tragic loss,yet she doesn't seem in touch with her actual emotions" Matthews told us "excuse me? I'm balling my eyes out I'm going to have to leave class early" Myzell re-opened the door and left "wow she actually made it out the door this time!" Matthews opened the door to revile Myzell I actually made it out the door this time!" She said happily as she went to her seat "dad adjust and deal" Riley told her father "cellphones have been around for like...ever" "it'll amaze you to know that there was a whole world before you and cellphones" Matthews told her I let out a fake gasp "no really? I'm shocked" I mocked he gave me a look "and it'll amaze you to know that I have 394 friends in here" Riley said pointing to her phone "and I'm amazed that you believe that" he said sarcastically as he went up to the board and started to draw a line "this is a timeline of all human existence starting here is everyone who ever lived,laughed,loved and understood the value of life" he said as he drew a vertical line "the cellphone era,which begins right around here,pretty much destroys all of that way to go you" Matthews said "sir if I may take a different position" Lucas asked "yeah save me mr Frier do I go to far?" Matthews asked "you gotta be kidding me" I said "always sir" Lucas told him "I understand your point but I use my phone to video chat my old friends and to find out what's going on back in Texas" he said "yeah how else can he keep tabs on all the hoedowns" I smirked "don't forget about the cattle pageants" Maya reminded I laughed "Sam! Maya!" Riley hissed "it's okay Riley I'm unaffected by Sam and Maya's views of country life as my uncle Buster always says "be like an eagle and soar above the mockingbirds" he told her "you two are the mockingbirds" Riley told us "we know" Maya spoke for the both of us "it's kills us that we can't get to you" I told Lucas as I turned in my seat to face him "sorry madam" he smiled tipping a imaginary cowboy hat at us  "ohhhhhhh" I shuttered "Farkle time sir?" Farkle asked "oh I love Farkle time" Matthews said as he and Farkle switched places "with all due respect to history mr Matthews what's important to our generation will be on this side of the timeline when Farkle and technology rule" he said as he walked over to Riley "I will make another one of  you" he said pulling a stand of Riley's hair "ow!" She said "and another one of you" Farkle said walking over to Maya and doing the same "ow!" Maya said "and another one of you" Farkle said before coming to my desk and doing the same thing "ow!" I said "wait so now there's six of us and one of you?" Riley asked "that's awesome" Farkle exclaimed "no it's not" I told him "the future you can't escape it! I am Farkle!" Farkle shouted walking back to his desk "the assignment you can't escape it I am teacher!" Matthews said mimicking Farkle the class went dead silent "okay so here's what we're going to do we're going to spit into teams and discover whether or not new technology has made us better people" Matthews said "you'll do presentations based on your findings and there's a twist:NO COMPUTERS "what?!" I shouted "we're going old school you're going to do your research at the Amber Beach public library" "where?" Maya yelled "and here's another twist because I trust you not at all give me your cellphones" he ordered "No!" Riley yelled "yeah" he told her as he passed around a basket for us to put our cellphones in "okay so our teams for this assignment will be Maya-" Matthews started Farkle jumped into Maya's arms all of a sudden "what up?" He shouted Maya pushed him off "and Sam you join with Maya and Farkle" he told me I nodded "and Riley you will be with-" Matthews saw Lucas "no!" He yelled the bell rang we all got up "no why did you have to come here?" Matthews asked Lucas "sorry I make you uneasy sir" Lucas said then he walked out of the classroom "oh dad we don't have our phones I mean what could possibly happen?" Riley asked as we walked out "hey soaring eagle!" I yelled at Lucas "you walking with us to the library tonight?" "Sure if that's okay with you guys" Lucas replied "well seeing how you're Riley's partner for this assignment I guess we should see if it's okay with her Riley?" Maya asked Riley just stood there "Riley any thoughts on this that might come out of your mouth in word form?" I asked "no because you don't have your phone anymore so what are you going to use to communicate? I wonder" Maya said Riley smiled and gave two thumbs up "oh look at that two thumbs up from Riley,and a smiley face" Maya said
Time skip...........
I walked home with Maya "so how are things holding up?" She asked "just the same thing over and over,it just gets worse though,why does it get worse?" I asked she shook her head "I don't know just keep believing it will get better and maybe it will" Maya told me "I will" I smiled we walked to the Matthews apartment "hey losers it's Sam and Maya!" I though the intercom we opened the door "yeah like I've learned that I'm actually really okay with all of this" Maya said I nodded "you don't miss your phones?" Mrs Matthews asked "Sam and I are the only ones in class without smart phones anyway so now we feel like everyone else is even" I told her the intercom buzzed again "Farkle" Farkle said through the intercom "be ready in a minute" Riley told him "and Lucas" we heard Lucas say "ready now" she said I laughed we headed to the library
Time skip........
"What is this place?" I asked as we entered the library "this is where the ancients stored all of their wisdom" Farkle told us "look at all of those" Maya said "books" Farkle said "books" Riley,Maya and I said in unison "look" Lucas said he picked up a book and blew dust off of it "tales of human interaction" he read "we'll take it!" I exclaimed grabbing the book from Lucas and walking over to a table with everyone behind me "Farkle do whatever you do with that" I said putting the book on the table "you mean read?" He asked I nodded "chapter one" he began "ugh! I'm bored out of my mind let's go see a movie" Maya suggested "shh!" Someone shushed us "ah!" We screamed and turned around to see a old lady reading a book "there's one of those ancients now" Farkle whispered we walked up to the lady "oh wondrous gatekeeper of the knowledge we are travelers from another time and place" Farkle told the lady I rolled my eyes "seventh grade middle school" Riley said "we wish to partake of this information from your great hall of wisdom" Farkle said "do you rent phones?" Riley asked "shh!" The lady said "there's nobody here but us" Lucas pointed out "yeah why do we have to shush?" I asked "let me handle this Sam" Farkle told me "she obviously likes quite" "hello book lady" Farkle greeted "well hello and who might you be?" Book lady asked "I might be Farkle" Farkle said "would you do me a favor Farkle?" Book lady asked he nodded "why don't you go over there and shush!" She told him "well that's disappointing" I mumbled "so yeah uh-huh" Farkle said walking over to the book "this chapter is called "disconnect to connect" Farkle said "not until we put down our phones switch off our computers and look into each other's eyes will we be able to touch each other's hearts" Maya read "yeah like that's going to work on anybody" I said
Time skip..........
Riley and Lucas were at the table Maya was doing something in her notebook Farkle was talking and I was writing something down in my notebook "people used to need places like this" Farkle said trying to get our attention I stopped and looked at him "now we can hold everything that's here in a little device we can put in our pockets I don't even need to look out this window to know what phase the moon is in or where the stars are" he told us "yeah well I don't have a phone like that" I said "me neither I just have the actual sky" Maya said "oh I'm so sorry for you guys you're at a real disadvantage that can be the basis of our presentation okay? Want to read back the notes?" He asked "what notes?" Maya asked "you weren't taking notes? Farkle asked "no" Maya sighed "you know why bother? Without a computer all we have is a pencil and a notebook what could we possibly do with that?" He asked grabbing Maya's notebook I gasped "Maya I had no idea" Farkle breathed showing Maya the picture she had drawing of the night sky "yeah neither did I" she admitted staring at picture
Time skip.......
"Because it's not until you really looked at each other and made a human connection that you can even begin to know each other" Maya read from the book "look into my eyes" Farkle ordered "no!" Maya yelled "look into my eyes" he said again "no!" I said "look into my eyes" "no!" We yelled in unison "there is no connection you can make with any screen that compares to the moment you understand only human beings have souls" I read "I have a soul" Farkle said "no!" I said "I do" he told me "no!" Maya said "I do!" He shouted "no!" Maya and I yelled in unison
Time skip........
We were in the history classroom the next day Matthews was handing us back our phones "here you go take your phone take it now very good here's your phone" Matthews said handing out the last of the phones "good great nobody talks to nobody no more feelings thank you" he said "okay guys the great  technology debate" he said as he walked to the front of the classroom "let's boot it up" Matthews cheered my friends and I walked to the front of the room "I have always believed technology would help us fulfill our potential as a species and when Farkle does rule the world no matter what devices we come up with we should also never forget what we can do with a pencil,a piece of paper and our own imaginations" Farkle said he took something out of his pocket and in-folded it to revile Maya's picture "I've been keeping this in my pocket where my phone used to be I keep looking at it I'm fine" Farkle said "thanks Farkle" Maya said "wait there's something else" he told us he took out another piece of paper and began to read it

I smiled "this was a song written by Sam Ford" Farkle said "thank you Farkle" I said "look into my eyes" he ordered me "no!" I shouted "I thought my whole life was in my phone but it turns out that I don't really have any friends in here and you don't need your phone to connect with your real friends" Riley said "allow us to demonstrate" Lucas said they turned to face each other "hi" Lucas greeted "hi" Riley said back
Time skip........
Maya and I stood behind one of the bookshelves in the library we saw Matthews walk in he pushed some books aside on a pretty high shelf "we're not that tall" Maya told him he tried another shelf that was almost to the ground "really?" I asked he pushed aside some books that were in our height rage "how ya doing?" I asked "you two will keep a eye on Riley at all times you two will send me message alerts you two will send me pictures" he told us "you're really scared aren't you?" Maya asked "I'm a father" he told us "yeah they're just friends" I told him "believe me I know the story" he said "but you're forgetting we don't have the technology" Maya reminded him "now you do" he said we walked out from behind the bookshelf to where Matthews was standing he handed each of us a box "you got us phones?" Maya asked "my motives are completely shelfish" he said "I'm not sure they are Matthews" I told him "well I also got you these" he gave Maya another box and she opened it in surprise "colored pencils?" She asked "yeah and Sam I also got you something" he said to me as he handed me another box I opened it "pens? And a new notebook?" I asked he nodded "you two let me know everything that's going on with Riley and if something beautiful ever happens paint me a picture,or write me a song" he smiled as he exited the library Maya and I smiled to ourselves as we headed back to Maya's apartment
